Summer Silo Audits: Beat Dust Risks with 80GHz 3D Radar Sensing
Summer heat makes bulk solids cling to silo walls and distorts inventory figures. Rettar measures the surface without contact using the 80 GHz 3DPro2300 radar scanner, 16,200 points per sweep, ATEX and IECEx certified. Rising seasonal temperatures introduce serious operational challenges across bulk material handling facilities. In agricultural grain silos and industrial coal storage, intense ambient heat combined with fine airborne dust elevates thermal buildup and static explosion risks. Passing strict summer safety audits requires accurate, continuous monitoring without exposing operators to hazardous conditions. Implementing an 80GHz 3DPro2300 Radar Scanner for coal silos and grain processing provides a 3D surface mapping solution that eliminates static risks while ensuring precise bulk inventory tracking. Unseen Hazards Under Extreme Summer Heat Hot summer days change how bulk materials behave inside storage silos. Direct sun bakes steel silo roofs, trapping heat and moisture inside closed spaces. In these conditions, dry grain, starch, and coal dust stick to smooth silo walls. This material clinging forms hidden bridges, holes, and thick crusts that nobody can see from the outside.…

Grate Magnets for free-flowing gravity fed products
Grate magnets sit in the product stream and hold ferrous contaminants on the tube surface, out of the flow, so they cannot wash back into clean material. Grate Magnets are placed directly in the product stream allowing free flowing products to come in direct contact with the grate. Grate Magnets are typically constructed with one inch diameter magnetic tubes mounted on two inch centers in a frame. The length and width can be fabricated to any dimension, usually in two inch increments. Grate Magnets offer excellent protection from metal contamination. As product flows over the magnetic tubes, captured metal contaminants are pushed to the underside of the tube where they are now out of contact with the product flow preventing washoff back into the clean material. Cleaning is achieved by removing the Grate Magnet and wiping the magnetic tubes clean. It is important to keep in mind that by placing a Grate Magnet in the product flow, you will be reducing fifty percent of your flow through area. Grate Magnets should be sized so they do not impede the flow of product. Magnetically engineered to provide a full range of ferrous…

Potash Compaction: 10 Levers That Decide Every Circuit’s Stability
Potash compaction: 10 critical levers - from press force to the screening machine as the value-adding machine that keeps the circuit stable. In potash compaction, nothing is a minor detail. A single weak point is enough to throw the entire granulation circuit off balance - here, small causes produce large and costly effects. From press force and roller wear to the screening machine that acts as the true ”value-adding machine”: we have compiled the 10 decisive points that really matter. The granulation circuit in potash compaction does not run linearly - it forms a self-contained system in which every process step feeds back into all the others. Roller press, impact mill, and screening machine are so tightly interlinked that a single weak point can put the entire production process at risk. As specialists in precise screen classification, we support this circuit again and again at its most sensitive interface, which is why we know exactly which factors destabilize it. A compaction and screening circuit that ”runs out of control” overloads the roller press, which - as the most expensive single machine…

Coal Storage Inventory Monitoring: 3D Laser vs. Millimeter-Wave Radar
Coal inventory in silos or sheds is challenging due to dust and humidity. 3D laser scanners suit sheds with moderate dust for detailed mapping. 80GHz radar is best for enclosed silos with extreme dust/steam for deep penetration. Keeping track of bulk coal inventory is a persistent operational challenge. In large storage sheds and tall silos, heavy airborne dust, humid vapor, and shifting material piles make accurate volume estimation exceptionally difficult. Measuring these stockpiles precisely is essential to maintain steady boiler feed rates in power plants while protecting silos from structural damage caused by asymmetrical loading. Both 3D laser scanners and millimeter-wave 3D radars offer automated, non-contact volumetric tracking—each excelling in specific plant environments. Key Takeaways: * 3D Laser Scanning: Best for indoor coal sheds and semi-enclosed domes with light-to-moderate dust where high-density spatial resolution and detailed surface mapping are needed. * 80GHz Millimeter-Wave Radar: Ideal for enclosed coal silos with extreme dust, high humidity, and heavy steam due to its superior signal penetration. * Operational Impact: Both technologies eliminate high-risk manual climbing,…

3 solar drying lines and a complete sludge conveyance system
As part of the modernisation of the Valff sewage treatment works, Sodimate supplied a complete sludge conveyance system for its client in France. This system ensures the transport of sludge from the mechanical dewatering stage through to final storage. Following dewatering using two screw presses, the sludge is collected, conveyed and then distributed across three solar drying lines. This process enables the operator to reduce energy consumption for sludge dewatering and drying by a factor of nine, thereby fully aligning with its ambitious strategy for the energy transition. Once drying is complete, the dried sludge is collected at the other end of the greenhouse and transported for final disposal. Main components supplied: - ️Collection and conveyance of the dewatered sludge At the outlet of the two screw presses, the dewatered sludge is first collected by a Sodimate screw conveyor. A second screw conveyor then transports the sludge to the distribution system in the solar drying greenhouse. These initial conveying stages ensure the continuous transport of the dewatered sludge from the mechanical dewatering stage to the drying process. - ️Distribution in the solar drying greenhouse The sludge is then fed into a…

3D Radar for Coal Silos: Preventing Summer Caking Risks
Wet coal in silos causes inaccurate inventory, wall clinging, and structural stress. The RETTAR 3DPro 2300 Radar Scanner provides precise 3D real-time bulk solids monitoring, preventing blockages and ensuring safe, accurate fuel management. Peak summer electricity demands require power plants to maintain maximum fuel reserves. However, high seasonal humidity and heavy rainstorms make stored coal wet and cohesive, causing material to stick to vessel walls and form hidden internal cavities. Deploying an advanced system, such as the RETTAR 3DPro 2300 Radar Scanner, addresses these measurement errors by replacing single-point estimations with continuous radar tracking—ensuring reliable bulk inventory tracking, preventing structural wall damage, and enabling safe fuel management. Seasonal Hazards vs. 3D Real-Time Bulk Monitoring Solutions Summer humidity and heavy rainfall create severe material handling challenges in power generation plants. Wet coal becomes highly cohesive, causing it to cling to vessel walls and form dangerous hidden arches or cavities. Traditional meters often measure a single high spot, mistaking a half-empty vessel for a full one and causing critical fuel supply disruptions. Furthermore,…

Gypsum processing for the production of plaster boards using the ringl
The production process for plasterboard and gypsum fibre board starts with the specific preparation of the raw material. A ringlayer mixing system offers different advantages compared to other mixing processes. Plasterboard and gypsum fibre board are used billions of times over in interior construction. A recent market report [1] estimates the global production volume for 2025 to be around 16.89 billion square metres. This figure is expected to increase to 22.76 billion square metres by 2030. Manufacturers of these building materials must therefore produce very large quantities of the required quality at an internationally competitive price. The gypsum core of a board plays a key role in ensuring that plasterboard and gypsum fibre boards can fulfil their specific functions in drywall and acoustic construction to the highest standard, determining product properties such as flexibility, stability and fire resistance. Preparation process To ensure that the gypsum core is suitable for these tasks, the raw material – ground and calcined gypsum stone (calcium sulphate dihydrate, CaSO₄·2H₂O) – must be processed according to the relevant specifications. The result of this…

Vortex Supplies Custom Loading Spouts to Drax Station
Vortex Global has supplied eight custom-engineered loading spouts to Drax Power Ltd. in North Yorkshire, upgrading Pulverized Fuel Ash handling at the UK’s largest power station. Drax plays a central role in the UK’s national energy system. Following its transformation from coal to sustainable biomass, the station generates approximately 6% of the country’s total electricity and 11% of its renewable power. The biomass fuel takes the form of compressed wood pellets, sourced primarily from North America. Pulverized Fuel Ash (PFA) is a key by-product of the biomass combustion process. The material is sold to the UK construction industry for use in building materials, so reliable handling supports both operational continuity and a circular economy that repurposes what would otherwise be waste. The Challenge Drax had long relied on a system of eight loading spouts to transfer PFA from silos into trucks and rail cars. Over time, the existing equipment developed operational inefficiencies and reliability issues that called for a modern, precisely engineered replacement. The project presented five primary requirements: Spatial constraints: the available…

Aromatic und precise: Processing technology for tea and spice blends
For over 40 years, amixon® has been developing precision mixers for the gentle processing of tea, herbs, and spices. This article highlights why mixing technology in this industry determines aroma quality, product safety, and competitiveness. No other food segment is as immediately subject to sensory evaluation as tea and spices. Consumers can immediately smell and taste whether a product lives up to its promises. What ends up in the cup or on the plate is the direct result of the manufacturing process—and that is where blending technology makes the difference. Dried leaves, ground roots, botanical ingredients, and complex spice blends differ fundamentally in particle size, density, and surface structure. Only a mixing technology that accounts for these differences can reliably preserve structure, aroma, and product quality. Four Challenges the Industry Faces * Preserving the structure of delicate ingredients: Tea leaves, flowers, and coarsely crushed spices must not be ground in the mixer. Mechanical stress creates fine particles—and in high-quality tea and spice blends, fine particles are a quality defect, not a byproduct. * Uniform flavoring: Oleoresins, essential oils, and liquid extracts must be…

Behind the Scenes of RETTAR’s Precision 3D Radar Manufacturing
Harsh industrial conditions cause inaccurate bulk solids inventory in silos. Advanced 80GHz 3D level scanners, rigorously tested for extreme environments, provide continuous, precise volumetric measurement for reliable stock control. Industrial bulk material processing relies on accurate stock monitoring to prevent unexpected production stoppages. During peak summer operations, extreme heat, high humidity, and heavy dust cause material caking along vessel walls, leading to significant inventory accounting errors. Deploying an advanced 3D level scanner for silos addresses these data gaps by replacing manual estimations with continuous radar tracking, ensuring reliable stock records, enhanced workplace safety, and seamless factory material flow. Extreme Industrial Conditions Threaten Silo Inventory Management Maintaining precise bulk inventory presents ongoing operational challenges when field sensors operate in harsh plant conditions. Silo tops frequently reach temperatures above 60°C, which can cause standard electronic components to suffer signal drift or thermal throttling. At the same time, internal humidity causes fine powders to cake and cling to internal walls, creating hollow spaces that…

Homogenize Powder Mixtures
Dust-free, free-flowing granules due to agglomeration of the powder particles. No segregation during subsequent processes, transport and storage. Homogeneous product mixtures through agglomeration of the powder particles Product blends make handling easier for the user. Whether it is instant soups, powdered beverages or the homogeneous distribution of active ingredients in a carrier, the precise weighing of the components in different quantities and the mixing process can be realized much more easily in large-scale plants. But what if the starting materials are very different in terms of density, particle size and shape? Here, spray agglomeration of powders in the fluid bed of the mixture can counteract segregation in subsequent processes, packaging or transport. By spraying on a binder solution, the surface of the mixture is wetted and fine particles agglomerate into larger granules or are adhered to coarser particles. However, if the shape and size are too different, fine particles can alternatively be sprayed on together with the binder solution and thus be homogeneously distributed over the coarser components.…
