Russell Finex improves food powder sieving efficiency for SternMaid

Russell Finex improves food powder sieving efficiency for SternMaid

Integrated solution enhances productivity and streamlines ingredient processing

SternMaid, part of the global Stern-Wywiol Gruppe, has improved the efficiency of its food ingredient processing operations by implementing a sieving solution from Russell Finex.
Producing a wide range of blended products, including confectionery mixes, bakery ingredients, and micronutrients, SternMaid processes up to 5,000 tonnes annually. Maintaining consistent product quality and efficient workflows is essential to meet production demands.
Food powder sieving plays a critical role in ensuring quality by removing contaminants, agglomerates, and oversized particles, while achieving uniform particle size for consistent blending.

Overcoming processing challenges

SternMaid identified inefficiencies in its production line that were limiting productivity. A single-sided dump station allowed only one operator to load ingredients at a time, making the process slow and labour-intensive.
Additionally, once blending was complete, bulk bags had to be manually transferred to a separate filling line. This increased handling time and extended the full process cycle to approximately one hour.

A more efficient, integrated solution

To address these challenges, SternMaid installed the Russell Compact Sieve® to screen powders before blending, alongside a magnetic separator to remove potential ferrous contamination.
The solution integrates sieving, blending, and filling into a single streamlined process, allowing materials to be discharged directly into bulk bags ready for shipment. A custom double-sided configuration also enables two operators to load simultaneously, increasing throughput.

Improved productivity and efficiency

  • Following implementation, process time has been reduced from around 60 minutes to 25 minutes, improving productivity by over 50%.
  • Reduced manual handling
  • Improved workflow efficiency
  • Enhanced product quality and contamination control
  • Better utilisation of labour and resources

Stephen Adams of SternMaid commented: “Russell Finex’s reputation speaks for itself. They’ve been helpful all along the way… With their support, we’ll cut costs, improve efficiencies and increase throughput.”
This project highlights how integrated sieving solutions can help food manufacturers improve operational efficiency while maintaining high product quality standards.

Russell Finex boosts API microsphere sieving efficiency
A global pharmaceutical manufacturer producing high-value sterile active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), including peptide-based medicines A leading pharmaceutical manufacturer produces over 250 high-value sterile active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), including complex peptide formulations such as Octreotide. These APIs form the critical components within medicines, delivering essential therapeutic benefits. Using aseptic manufacturing processes, the company produces microsphere powders, tiny, spherical particles ranging from 1 to 1,000 microns. These particles are central to advanced drug delivery systems, requiring precise and hygienic handling throughout production. Following initial processing, the manufacturer sieves the microsphere powders at 71 microns using an ultrasonic sifter within a sterile, controlled environment. However, the existing solution posed significant challenges. With a limited throughput of just 1.5 kg/hour, the system could not meet increasing market demand, restricting production scalability. To overcome these limitations, the manufacturer explored alternative GMP-compliant…

Check screening of chocolate at Godiva
International chocolatier Godiva safeguard product quality with self-cleaning in line filters for chocolate Godiva Chocolatier was founded 80 years ago in Brussels, Belgium and supplies its range of luxury chocolates to over 80 countries. Using only the finest chocolate and highest quality ingredients, Godiva chocolates are found in some of the most prestigious stores around the world, from Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Department Store in central Tokyo. As with many chocolate processes, foil is commonly used to wrap chocolate because of its decorative/luxury appearance and ease of wrapping varying shapes. However, this complicates rework processes, since the foil must be removed beforehand and as a result pieces of foil can contaminate the chocolate. Godiva identified two areas where foreign bodies could enter the chocolate and looked at how they could eliminate this. Following a visit to their chocolate supplier who were using Russell Finex self-cleaning filtration units, Godiva contacted Russell Finex for a solution. Following…
