Check screening of chocolate at Godiva

International chocolatier Godiva safeguard product quality with self-cleaning in line filters for chocolate

Godiva Chocolatier was founded 80 years ago in Brussels, Belgium and supplies its range of luxury chocolates to over 80 countries. Using only the finest chocolate and highest quality ingredients, Godiva chocolates are found in some of the most prestigious stores around the world, from Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Department Store in central Tokyo.

As with many chocolate processes, foil is commonly used to wrap chocolate because of its decorative/luxury appearance and ease of wrapping varying shapes. However, this complicates rework processes, since the foil must be removed beforehand and as a result pieces of foil can contaminate the chocolate.

Godiva identified two areas where foreign bodies could enter the chocolate and looked at how they could eliminate this. Following a visit to their chocolate supplier who were using Russell Finex self-cleaning filtration units, Godiva contacted Russell Finex for a solution. Following an in-depth risk assessment, a combination of both in-line filtration units and circular vibratory sieves were provided, which covered two critical control points within the system.

Two Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter® systems were installed after each storage tank to remove any contaminant from within the tanks that could have been introduced through rework. These liquid chocolate filters were selected due to their high flow rates and innovative self-cleaning design meaning operator involvement is kept to a minimum.

The second control point was just before the depositors. A bank of Russell Compact Sieves replaced the two existing sieving units, working in tandem with the in-line filters. “The Compact 400 sieves were chosen as they fitted neatly into our existing process without losing the cleanability of the depositors” states Peter Van Ingelghem, Engineering and Maintenance Manager at Godiva.

Russell Finex boosts productivity at Windsor & Eton Brewery
Established in 2010, the Windsor & Eton Brewery, produces over 1.2 million pints of beer annually and has won 90+ major awards. They supply to local pubs, bars, and restaurants, also run a taproom, shop, and pub in Eton named The George. Additionally, they collaborate with breweries worldwide. Earlier on, the brewery used a small metal filter for coarse filtration, to remove yeast slurry and hop material from the beer before filling into kegs, cans, and bottles. However, this filter frequently clogged, causing up to 15 minutes of downtime every hour for cleaning. By switching to the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter®, the brewery eliminated this downtime. The new filter’s solids waste valve allowed continuous waste removal without halting production, processing 420,000 liters a year and saving 40 hours of downtime. Additionally, the filter cartridge has a longer operational life, saving the brewery £2,000 each year. Windsor & Eton Brewery also plans to use

Ferrara Pan Candy ensures quality with Russell Finex Blow Thru Sieve
Ferrara Pan Candy enhances food safety with advanced ingredient screening As consumers increasingly demand better food safety standards, Ferrara Pan Candy has taken a proactive step by investing in the Russell Blow Thru Sieve™. This investment was made to enhance their food safety control system by eliminating contamination from ingredients delivered to their site. Ferrara Pan Candy, known for producing popular confections such as Original Boston Baked Beans, Lemonhead, Red Hots, Jaw Busters, and Atomic Fireballs, manufactures approximately 750,000 lbs of candy per day. To sustain this production level, over one million lbs of sugar is delivered to the factory via rail each week, where it is transferred from the rail car to a silo via a bucket conveyor. Although sugar is refined before it is used for production, Ferrara ensures that no molasses, minerals, or other non-sugar contaminants have entered the product during rail car filling and transportation. Therefore, Ferrara invested in a screening system designed to remove any impurities
