Digital Simulations for Silo Cleaning When bulk solids flow stalls: why digital simulations hold the key to safe silo unblocking
Digital Simulations for Silo Cleaning
When bulk solids flow stalls: why digital simulations hold the key to safe silo unblocking Bridging, ratholing, and material scaling: When material flow comes to a standstill in the bulk solids industry, expensive production downtimes and massive safety risks are inevitable. With its new, interactive Silo Blockage Simulator, NT Service GmbH is setting new standards in customer education, demonstrating how modern flow and blockage problems can be visually decoded – before the first technician even arrives on site. In theory, silo physics are simple: bulk material is loaded at the top and flows out evenly at the bottom due to gravity (mass flow). In reality, however, everyday operations in the food, feed, construction, and chemical industries often look quite different. Fluctuations in moisture, electrostatic charges, or poor flow properties can transform stored material into an unpredictable medium. When the discharge stops, plant managers and maintenance teams face a massive logistical and financial challenge. The problem: from the outside, it is usually…

Toward EN 17975 compliant Lockout/Tagout
The recent European Norm 17975 addresses ‘grey zone’ energy-related risks during machine and pipeline interventions and proposes a task based framework for safe and efficient work. The norm can further increase the safety and efficiency of Lockout/Tagout programmes in a wide range of industries. A task based safety framework 10%-15% of fatal workplace accidents in Europe’s industries are related to maintenance operations according to data from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work. Many of these result from underestimating risks involved in specific tasks such as machine greasing, sensor adjustment or a quick cleaning that are not always seen as ‘maintenance activities’. They are kept outside the scope of Lockout/Tagout programmes even though workers are exposed to similar risks. European Norm (EN) 17975 addresses these grey zone risks by using task based risk analyses as a starting point. “EN 17975 does not require an energy zero state for every machine or pipeline during every intervention”, said Mustafa Ekseri, EMEA Safety Engineer at Brady Corporation, a supplier of quality [AHREF**SW**brady.co.uk/lockout-tagout?sfdc=701UK00000PjkRsYAJ&utm_source=bulksolidsportal&utm_medium=web-advertorial&utm_campaign=sfid-loto&utm_content=lotoen17975webinar&camp=display-uk-awareness-bulksolidsportal-lotoen17975_wadv**Lockout/Tagout…

Process technology for metal powder and high-precision applications
In powder metallurgy, metallic components are created from precisely defined metal powders. These powders are intentionally processed, mixed, and then further processed through compaction and sintering. Powder metallurgical products are indispensable in many industries. They are used in traditional applications such as bearings, gears, or filters as well as in additive manufacturing of metallic components. In all these areas, the quality of powder processing determines how stable processes run and how consistent the component quality is in the end. Typical products and technical terms in powder metallurgy: - Metal powders based on iron, stainless steel, titanium, or nickel - Alloy and additive mixtures - Powder blends for pressing and sintering processes - Metal powders for additive manufacturing processes (Metal AM) - Functionalized powders with flow or compaction aids Requirements for mixing, drying, and processing Powder metallurgical processes place high demands on powder preparation. Additives, alloying elements, or flow aids must be evenly distributed - because even small deviations affect compaction and sintering behavior. At the same time, the powders…

How to Cut Grain Silo Inventory Errors with RETTAR 3D Radar Scanners
RETTAR 3D Radar Scanners solve silo inventory errors caused by dust and uneven surfaces. By providing real-time 3D volume mapping, they deliver precise data traceability, optimize purchasing, and eliminate risky manual inspections. Traditional grain storage measurement methods often fail to reflect true stock levels, leading to significant inventory errors. Inside massive silos, uneven discharging and heavy dust create steep material cones and side-wall clinging that conventional sensors simply miss. To resolve these physical limits, 3DPro2300 Radar Scanner networks are moving facilities past single-point tracking into an age of absolute 3D inventory transparency. By modeling the entire bin in real time, this advanced approach secures precise stockpile volume measurement, multi-point surface tracking, and reliable data traceability to optimize raw material purchasing. Disruption of Silo Inventory Management Accurate volume monitoring for large silos requires accounting for multiple complex physical factors. Inflowing grain naturally creates steep cone formations, while rapid emptying leaves deep, asymmetrical valleys. Furthermore, cohesive stocks like damp soybean meal frequently cling to internal…

Why 3D Sensing Is Becoming Essential for Smart BulkMaterial Management
New 3D radar sensing boosts bulk material handling safety and accuracy in silos. It delivers real-time volumetric measurements, cutting through dust to end hazardous manual inspections and improve inventory data. Modern industrial storage facilities increasingly face strict requirements for high inventory accuracy, larger silo structures, and improved workplace safety. Traditional single-point level transmitters lead to up to 15% inventory discrepancies due to material cones and slumps. To address these limitations, 3D sensing technology offers a critical automated approach to modern bulk material handling. By replacing guesswork with real-time 3D volumetric reconstruction, this technology provides the accurate tracking and enhanced safety required for smart factory infrastructure. Bulk Material Challenges: Blind Spots and Hidden Inventory Risks Without reliable inventory metrics, automated data transparency between plant floors and executive decision-makers drops. This lack of clear data frequently forces operational teams to conduct hazardous manual inspections on high catwalks, demonstrating why advanced 3D sensing is becoming essential for modern operations. At a cement…

Optimizing Spray Drying: Real-Time Humidity & Fire Detection
Humidity dictates spray drying efficiency and safety. REMBE’s CO.Pilot measures absolute humidity in real time, helping operators slash energy costs, stabilize product quality, and detect early-stage fires with integrated CO monitoring. How Humidity Dictates Spray Drying Outcomes In spray drying, humidity has a significant influence on the entire process. Both the absolute humidity in the supply air and in the exhaust air directly determine the drying dynamics - with consequences for energy efficiency, product quality and process safety. The Cost of High Supply and Exhaust Humidity Excessive humidity in the supply air reduces the vapour pressure gradient between the product and the air. The consequences are reduced evaporation rates, longer drying times and higher energy consumption. At the same time, high exhaust air humidity can be an indication of inefficient drying, for example due to condensation, inadequate air routing or overloading of the system. In such cases, undesirable material deposits often occur. The Hidden Risks of Overdrying Your Product Excessively low humidity in the exhaust air should be viewed critically. It often indicates overdrying. This leads to unnecessary energy consumption…

Mixer for the production of pharmaceutical products
Pharmaceutical solid processes place high demands on accuracy and control from the beginning. This diversity must be reliably controlled in the production process. Pharmaceutical solid processes place high demands on accuracy and control from the beginning. Raw materials are precisely specified, active ingredients are often highly effective and present in small amounts, and each batch must be processed consistently. Even the smallest deviations can have an impact on subsequent process steps. In daily practice, it mostly involves powders, granules, and premixes, whose physical properties – such as particle size, bulk density, or flow behavior – vary greatly. This diversity must be reliably controlled in the production process so that stable active ingredient-excipient systems, functional intermediates, or premixes for solid dosage forms can be created. Typical dry products of the pharmaceutical industry include: * pharmaceutical active ingredients (APIs) * excipients such as lactose, mannitol, starch or cellulose derivatives * premixes for tablet and capsule production * granules * powder mixtures for oral dosage…

Precision Mining: Revolutionizing Copper Ore Inventory
The 3DPro2501 Laser Scanner transforms copper mining logistics by replacing manual estimates with high-accuracy 3D data, ensuring operational efficiency in the harshest industrial environments. The Cost of Manual Measurement in Copper Mining For years, large-scale copper mines have struggled with inventory control due to a reliance on manual measurements and subjective judgment. Inaccurate data and delayed reporting created a disconnect between procurement, production, and finance, leading to reactive decision-making. These inefficiencies directly impacted cost control, as the lack of a standardized system made it nearly impossible to maintain a precise balance of ore powder across expansive stockyards and enclosed storage areas. Overcoming Environmental Risks and Data Lag The physical reality of mining—irregular stockpiles, high dust, moisture, and extreme temperatures—renders traditional measurement tools unreliable. Manual surveys were not only time-consuming, often halting operations for a full day, but also posed significant safety risks to workers navigating unstable piles. Because records lagged behind actual site conditions, the facility frequently…

3D Laser Scanner Technology Secures Safe Grain Storage
3D Laser Scanner Technology Secures Safe Grain Storage
Modern agriculture relies on innovative tools to bridge the gap between field harvesting and safe bulk storage. Once grains are safely moved into open yards, facilities face a critical challenge: tracking inventory volume accurately across massive, irregular material surfaces while minimizing high-altitude inspection risks. The field-proven 3D laser scanner technology addresses these operational bottlenecks. By generating real-time 3D surface mapping of stock surfaces, the technology eliminates inventory discrepancies without exposing workers to hazardous climbing tasks. 3D Sensing Eliminates Manual Volume Errors Traditional inventory tracking forces workers to climb across massive grain stockyards and estimate bulk volumes using simple tape measures. Because large grain piles naturally form irregular peaks and valleys during handling, these manual checks create severe data gaps. Advanced 3D Sensing technology addresses this issue directly by performing automated…
