Vacuum bagging for “Battery Grade Carbon Black” at Birla Carbon
Clean, safe and scalable handling of extremely fine-powdered carbon black. When high-tech materials meet sophisticated packaging technology, precision is required. Birla Carbon has set the bagging specialist Greif-Velox precisely this challenge. The world’s leading supplier of carbon black is expanding into electromobility with a newly developed product for lithium-ion batteries. The carbon black variant from Birla Carbon is extremely fine-powdered, electrically conductive and essential for modern batteries. However, it is precisely these properties that make the material particularly difficult to handle: low density, high dust formation, high cleanliness requirements. Efficient bagging for the battery technology of tomorrow The solution? The VeloVac vacuum packer - specially developed for ultra-light powders such as carbon black, silica or color pigments. As a full-line system including ValvoSeal ultrasonic sealing and VeloPack handling robots, the complete package now offers Birla Carbon a fully automated, dust-free and highly scalable packaging process - from the product infeed to the finished stacked pallet. Why Birla

Qlar enables precise material testing in the expanded TestCenter
It’s all in the mix – with the completed expansion of its TestCenter in Darmstadt, Qlar (formerly Schenck Process) now offers its customers comprehensive support in the simulation of blending processes. Testing and optimising additives in concrete production By reducing the proportion of clinker, the cement industry aims to drastically cut CO₂ emissions in production. Cement manufacturers are therefore increasingly turning to additives such as granulated blast furnace slag, fly ash, calcined clay, recycled concrete and others. However, the different raw materials must be fed and blended in exact proportions to ensure the desired product quality. With the now expanded TestCenter in Darmstadt, Qlar offers perfect conditions for simulating such process steps and working with customers to validate the ideal material composition for the desired product result. ‘With the expansion of our TestCenter to include blending trials for sustainable cement, we are marking a decisive step forward in the development of environmentally friendly building materials,’ explains André Appel, Head of the TestCenter in Darmstadt. ‘Our goal is to take a leading role in the implementation

When Quality and Time Matter: How Allod Gained Efficiency with Indus
From outsourced filling to full in-house control — Allod cuts time, space, and quality risks with Indus Neva, achieving ROI in just 4 years. Since May 2023, Allod Werkstoff GmbH & Co. KG, a German specialist in high- performance TPE and thermoplastic compounds, has been using the Indus Neva Springhead big bag handling system to streamline their internal logistics. The switch has transformed how they fill their silo trucks — bringing the process entirely in-house for more control, reduced handling time, and a solid return on investment. The Challenge: Outsourced Filling Created Quality Risks Before adopting the Indus system, Allod had to ship filled big bags to a third-party logistics provider, where the bags were emptied into trucks. This extra step added not only time and cost, but also a quality risk: handling by external parties meant less control over product integrity and contamination potential. The Solution: maximize handling speed with Indus Neva After evaluating alternatives such as expensive bulk truck loaders and complex material conveyors, Allod chose the Indus Neva Springhead with open

Why indirect heating is becoming the norm in spray drying
Spray drying plays a crucial role in the food industry, and the technology behind this process has made significant advances. Indirect heating systems are increasingly replacing traditional direct systems. Here are five reasons why this shift is taking place and what benefits it brings. 1 Safety and health first Consumer safety is of paramount importance. Direct heating systems can introduce combustion products such as nitrates and nitrites into the final product, compounds that are potentially carcinogenic. Indirect heating completely eliminates this risk, resulting in safe and high-quality food products. 2 Energy efficiency and sustainability Although direct systems appear efficient in energy transfer, they add extra moisture to the process, reducing drying capacity by 15-30%. Indirect heating eliminates this moisture problem, lowers energy consumption and significantly reduces emissions. This leads to lower costs and a smaller carbon footprint. 3 Safety in the production environment Spray drying can generate dust that can be explosive on contact with open flames. Indirect heating systems completely separate the flame from the process airflow via a heat

Screening Machines, the Choice: Conventional or Directly Excited?
What’s the best screening solution for you? With many options available, companies often struggle to find the optimal machine for their specific requirements. Although all technologies serve the same basic purpose – the separation of particles by size – they fundamentally differ in their construction, operation, and applications. The right choice can not only increase productivity but also minimize maintenance and downtime, which is crucial in today’s competitive industrial landscape. Below, we’ll look at the differences between conventional vibratory screens and direct-excitation screen machines to help you make your decision. Conventional Vibratory Screens: How They Work Conventional vibratory screens operate with an oscillating motion transmitted to the entire screen frame. This movement is generated by eccentric shafts or unbalance motors, ensuring the material advances on the screen surface and particles can fall through the mesh. Advantages of Conventional Screens: * Simple design * High throughputs * Flexibility Disadvantages of Conventional Screens: * Inefficient separation with low vibration

Moisture measurement drastically reduces gas consumption
Save efficiently on energy with targeted moisture measurement when drying for example grain, animal feed pellets, sand and sewage sludge pellets Gas is used in a huge variation of dryers. The consumption of natural gas as a primary energy source has been standard for many years. It has even been promoted as a bridge technology until the application of energetic-technological alternatives is qualified. Just recently, a customer from Saarland told me that he scrapped his oil tank last year and switched to gas. At the moment, he is facing another rise in gas prices. Help is needed here to optimise the use of this resource and possibly make intelligent savings. A calculation example from a comparable application: 1 m³ of gas is required to reduce the moisture content of 1 tonne of sand by 1%. With a throughput of 85 tonnes per hour and an average required reduction of 4 %, 340 m³ of gas are consumed per hour. Now the energy costs have doubled. Instead of EUR 350,000 for gas, EUR 700,000 is now required to operate this dryer. Plenty of money to fund an instrumentation. The installation of moisture determination

Rotary distributor rotates longer with Kalocer
Kalenborn manufactured a rotary distributor for slag sand and lined it with Kalocer to protect it against wear. The rotary distributor is a plant component in the steel industry and is used for slag sand processing. The slag sand mixture is fed through an S-bend into the rotary distributor, which directs the slag sand mixture into the dewatering silos below. Kalenborn lined the S-bend and rotary distributor with Kalocer aluminium oxide ceramic. The ceramic moulded parts could be adapted particularly well to the demanding geometry of the rotary distributor. Kalocer protects the system parts from the extreme friction wear of the slag-sand mixture, and the smooth surfaces of the ceramic promote the transport of the slag mixture. The old rotary distributor was Kalenborn’s original equipment and had been in successful use for over 20 years. Kalenborn ensured its long service life with regular maintenance of the wear protection. As part of the relining of the blast furnace, the order for the new rotary distributor was placed. This included the production of the steel part as

Chopping with the right shredder or screen
With the latest generation of nibblers, the Gericke GNB, a new release of screens has also been added to the portfolio. Gericke has many years of experience with a wide variety of milling machines and granulators which are sold under the name “nibbler”. Based on this knowledge, Gericke’s experts are able to select shredders or screens according to the customer’s requirements. With the latest generation of nibblers, the Gericke GNB, a new release of screens has also been added to the portfolio. A Gericke nibbler crushes lumps, agglomerates, filter cakes, rework or frozen raw materials into processable grain sizes. The selection of the screen plays a role in efficiency. When crushing brittle products with the aim of keeping the fines content low, different refining inserts are used than for tough, greasy or moist products, which could tend to clog the screen. An output product from a belt dryer, for example, is often brittle and fragile, but also hygroscopic. Many customers aim to minimise the number of fines when shredding the product to achieve a high yield. The screen

The sensor includes a fixed two-core cable for easy connection to a monitoring device or junction box. As the wiring is not polarity sensitive, installation is simplified, and the cable can be extended in the field if needed. All sensors in the WDB83x series operate in a normally closed (NC) state, meaning the circuit remains closed under normal conditions. When the preset temperature limit is exceeded, the bimetal element opens the circuit to trigger an alarm. The circuit automatically resets once the temperature drops back below the reset threshold. These sensors are primarily used for over-temperature protection in

Custom made chain conveyors with material testing as starting point
Material behavior: the key to robust and reliable design of chain conveyors, also called drag conveyors and Redlers When handling bulk materials in demanding environments—especially those that are abrasive, corrosive, or volatile, chain conveyor (drag conveyor, Redler), is often the best solution. However, its performance and lifespan depend entirely on how well it is adapted to the specific properties of the material it will transport. And that adaptation begins with detailed material testing. Robust and reliable design Chain conveyors are commonly used where durability, sealing, and controlled flow are essential. This includes industries handling mineral products, fertilizers, or alternative fuels. For such applications, a one-size-fits-all design is not only inefficient but can result in severe equipment degradation and safety risks. To avoid these issues, it’s vital to begin with a technical study of the bulk material’s behavior. The main properties to analyze are: * Bulk density * Particle size and shape * Flowability and angle of repose * Moisture content *
