Qlar enables precise material testing in the expanded TestCenter

It’s all in the mix – with the completed expansion of its TestCenter in Darmstadt, Qlar (formerly Schenck Process) now offers its customers comprehensive support in the simulation of blending processes.

Testing and optimising additives in concrete production

By reducing the proportion of clinker, the cement industry aims to drastically cut CO₂ emissions in production. Cement manufacturers are therefore increasingly turning to additives such as granulated blast furnace slag, fly ash, calcined clay, recycled concrete and others. However, the different raw materials must be fed and blended in exact proportions to ensure the desired product quality.
With the now expanded TestCenter in Darmstadt, Qlar offers perfect conditions for simulating such process steps and working with customers to validate the ideal material composition for the desired product result. ‘With the expansion of our TestCenter to include blending trials for sustainable cement, we are marking a decisive step forward in the development of environmentally friendly building materials,’ explains André Appel, Head of the TestCenter in Darmstadt. ‘Our goal is to take a leading role in the implementation of solutions and the validation of clinker substitutes in order to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in cement production.’

Precise measurements and blending tests

The new closed loop system at the TestCenter allows different products to be combined and accuracy tests to be carried out using different measuring principles. At the heart of the new tower setup are the MULTICOR S mass flow meter and LIW Feeder MET screw feeder. MULTICOR S can measure bulk quantities of up to 7 t/h in the closed loop. Based on the Coriolis principle, this technology delivers high-precision measurements with an accuracy of ±0.5%, even with bulk material of different particle sizes. When combined with the LIW Feeder MET screw feeder, two-component processes can be simulated. The rotation of the MULTICOR measuring wheel causes an initial mixing of the materials. Various materials can be mixed in different ratios in the TestCenter. The customer analyses the resulting material samples and can use the results to fine-tune their production process.

Evaluating new material combinations

‘The weighing, feeding and pneumatic conveying test stations already available at our TestCenter have now been meaningfully extended,’ says Karsten Grünewald, Head of Sales Infrastructure at Qlar. ‘Our customers benefit from simplified processes for evaluating new material combinations, dosing concepts and applications in order to make their cement production more sustainable.’ An initial test run with material from an international manufacturer has already been successfully completed, and further test series are in preparation.

Other specialised test and innovation centres

In addition to its location in Germany, Qlar operates other specialised test and innovation centres to support customers worldwide in process optimisation. While the TestCenter in Prague, Czech Republic, focuses on the processing of alternative fuels for the cement and recycling industries, pneumatic conveying and injection systems are tested at the Doncaster site in the United Kingdom.

Qlar combines yard management and weighing technology with LOGiQ
LogiMAT 2025: Fully automated for efficient and secure logistics processes At the annual intralogistics exhibition LogiMAT 2025 in Germany, Qlar, formerly Schenck Process, is presenting its yard management system LOGiQ. The cloud-based software solution automates all logistics processes in industrial yards and combines the weighing of bulk and general cargo materials with efficient loading operations. The technology is used primarily in the cement and steel industries but is also suitable for other production areas. The yard management system LOGiQ automatically controls all traffic on the company premises – from the entry of authorized trucks to their exit. It monitors the site entrance, carries out weighing processes, ensures correct loading and captures all relevant data in real time. This information is integrated into an ERP system, such as SAP, to provide up-to-date sales and administration data. LOGiQ also enables the secure integration of external gateways, which means that all logistical processes on the yard can be coordinated

Green transformation: Qlar defines ambitious sustainability targets
Following the rebranding of Schenck Process to Qlar, the long-established company from Darmstadt, Germany, is publishing its first sustainability report. True to its aspiration of ‘The future is cirQlar’ and in line with the green transformation, Qlar defines challenging goals. Progress in the areas of the circular economy, decarbonization, social and governance is regularly reviewed as part of an ambitious voluntary commitment. Qlar is following a strategic vision for a greener future. Decarbonisation and achieving a climate-neutral circular economy are of central importance. Among other things, the company wants to reduce its own CO2 emissions by 55 % over the next ten years. The same target applies to emissions from purchased energy. For the entire value chain, including suppliers, Qlar has defined the goal of reducing emissions by 36 % by 2033. Net zero is to be achieved by 2050. The other targets in the sustainability report are equally ambitious. Among other things, Qlar wants to further increase its turnover with green technologies. This currently stands at just over 20 %. The company’s waste recycling

Schenck Process presents CS+ feeder for battery cell production
Schenck Process will be presenting the CS+ loss-in-weight feeder system at the Battery Show in Stuttgart from 18th to 20th June (Booth B73, Hall 8). The modularly configurable system is specially designed to meet the requirements of electrode production and is suitable for both continuous and batch processes. It fulfils the highest standards of safety, cleanliness and dosing accuracy. The production of lithium-ion batteries is complex. To ensure a high-performance, high-quality product, contamination of the slurry by metallic abrasion and the ingress of air and moisture must be avoided. At the same time, maximum feeding accuracy under challenging pressure conditions and a reliable containment concept are required. The new CS+ loss-in-weight feeder system from Schenck Process perfectly meets these different requirements. CS+ can be customized to meet individual customer requirements. The modular design makes it possible to cover a large feeding range with just one feeder type: CS+ is suitable for small quantities from 30 litres per hour as well as for high feeding capacities of up to 3,000 litres per hour.
