Safety & Explosion Protection in Level Measurement
Smart Monitoring for Maximum Process Safety – Protecting People, Environment, and Equipment In the process industry, safety and explosion protection are among the most critical requirements. Especially in areas where explosive atmospheres can occur — such as those involving flammable gases, vapors, or fine dust — choosing the right technology is essential to reliably protect people, the environment, and equipment. The right level measurement technology Level sensors and intelligent monitoring systems from UWT provide exactly the level of protection needed for sensitive applications — globally and certified according to international standards such as ATEX / IECEx, NEC / CEC, overfill prevention, or SIL. Safety & Explosion Protection starts with the right level measurement technology. In hazardous areas, choosing the right sensor technology is crucial – because different safety and technical requirements apply depending on the zone classification. These zones are defined based on how frequently an explosive atmosphere of gas or dust may occur. Classification

Innovative project with VEGA technology: heating with hydrogen
Heating with hydrogen mixtures via existing natural gas pipelines is feasible. Supported by precision instrumentation from VEGA How can excess renewable electricity be stored and used sensibly? One possible answer to this question was provided by the groundbreaking project “NETZlabor Hydrogen Island Öhringen” – supported by precision instrumentation from VEGA. One promising approach to storing surplus electricity is to use it to produce hydrogen, which can be delivered as a fuel gas for heating systems. But is the utilisation of hydrogen or natural gas-hydrogen mixtures via existing gas pipelines technically feasible? A large-scale test carried out on the Netze BW site in Öhringen has provided much more clarity in answering this research question. Hydrogen produced in a Hydrogenics electrolyser was mixed with natural gas and distributed through the existing pipeline network. High-precision measurements The high-precision VEGA measurement technology played a key role here: Sensors like VEGABAR 82, equipped with robust ceramic measuring cells, monitored the pressure and flow rate

Free webinar: Effects of water on Calcium Oxide and Cement Products
From Carbon Fixing to Building structures: Optimising the carbonation reaction conditions for a fast complete carbonation process. Carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) is a process to utilise the captured carbon by finding suitable applications or converting into useful products such as plastics, concrete or biofuels etc. CCUS is strongly supported by the organisations across the globe to minimise the carbon footprints. Heavy industries such as cement, steel, and chemicals are often seen as the major producers of greenhouse gasses, therefore, the flue gases produced from processes are mixed with waste byproducts to create a useful product. The carbonation extent and kinetics are influenced by the factors dependent on the base material physiochemical properties and carbonation reaction conditions. Optimising these conditions are the premises for the fast carbonation process. Presenters: Dr Baldeep Kaur and Dr Sean McIntyre from Surface Measurement Systems Baldeep Kaur will discuss about the fundamentals of the carbonation process and Sean McIntyre will present research on the hydration

FGD gypsum recycling: securing future supply
With coal plants being phased out the construction industry faces a gypsum supply challenge. Recycling becomes a crucial alternative. The global shift away from coal-fired power plants has significantly impacted the availability of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) gypsum, a byproduct of these plants. With coal plants being phased out, particularly in countries like Germany where a complete shutdown is expected by 2038, the construction industry faces a gypsum supply challenge. Currently, more than half of Germany’s gypsum demand, approximately four million tons annually, is met through FGD gypsum. As natural gypsum sources are limited, recycling becomes a crucial alternative, with an estimated three to four million tons of gypsum waste available for recovery. Globally, FGD gypsum production is projected to peak around 2030, declining thereafter, especially in Europe, Japan, and potentially the USA. This shift presents both challenges, such as rising gypsum costs due to reduced FGD output, and opportunities, including a growing recycled gypsum market projected to reach $3.21 billion by 2030. Vortex Orifice Gate vs. Roller Gate: what’s the difference?
Vortex Orifice Gate and the Vortex Roller Gate are popular solutions for handling dry bulk solid materials. Both are slide gates. When should you choose which one? Since their conception decades ago, the Vortex Orifice Gate and the Vortex Roller Gate have been two of Vortex’s most popular solutions for handling dry bulk solid materials. By their simplest definitions, both the Orifice Gate and the Roller Gate are slide gates. However, the application benefits for each gate can be quite different. Inlet & Outlet Shape * Orifice Gate – Round Inlet * Roller Gate – Square Inlet Gate Size Alterations can be made to both the Orifice Gate and Roller Gate to build custom gate sizes. This can impact the blade’s travel distance, stack-up height, and many other variables of gate construction. Consult Vortex’s application team to discuss modifications that may/may not be made to accommodate your installation requirements. Conveyance Type The Roller Gate should only be used in gravity flow applications. If a system has pneumatic processes or differential air pressures within the system at any point, often times, a Roller

Safety first: UWT level measurement for dusty grain silos
Explosion protection in grain storage: Level measurement & monitoring silos – reliable and certified for Ex zones Fine dust, explosive atmosphere – challenging conditions are part of everyday operations in grain processing. Especially in mills, where large quantities of grain, meal or flour are handled and processed, the risk of dust explosions is real – and often underestimated. This makes the use of reliable, ATEX/ IECEx-certified level measurement technology all the more important. Challenge: Level measurement in Ex zone 20/21 At a grain mill in Austria, intermediate storage in a 12-meter (39-foot) high silo had to be reliably monitored. The task: a combination of continuous level measurement and precise point level detection – to effectively prevent overfilling and material shortage. Key requirements also included easy integration into the existing control system, low maintenance, and full compliance with explosion protection regulations for zones 20 and 21. Additional challenges: heavy dust generation and temporary overpressure during the filling process. The

Shock-blower air blast devices deal with materials caking
With short, targeted bursts of air, bridges are broken and the material is reactivated so that is starts flowing again. Air blast devices Bridging, ratholing and accrual against bunker and silo walls are familiar problems for any company that processes bulk goods. The consequences are extremely inconvenient: expensive delays in the production process, and potentially dangerous consequences when remedying these delays. Shock-blower® air blast devices will deal with materials caking. With short, targeted bursts of air, bridges are broken and the material is reactivated so that is starts flowing again. These blasters are manufactured by Agrichema GmbH in Germany. Why use Shock-Blowers * Maximum use of silo capacity; An air blast device releases bursts of highly compressed air or inert gas (max. 10 bar) in explosive blasts of a millisecond. *NEWLINE*This energy breaks bridges and fluidizes the material, enabling it to flow again. This prevents ratholing in silos and removes deposits. Your existing silo capacity is thus fully (re)activated. * Prevent hollow spaces; Specially developed

Stabilize Oxidation-Sensitive or Volatile Substances Protection for essential oils, carotenoids, flavors and hydrophobic substances and other active ingredients by micro encapsulation
Stabilize Oxidation-Sensitive or Volatile Substances
Protection for essential oils, carotenoids, flavors and hydrophobic substances and other active ingredients by micro encapsulation Protecting and drying hydrophobic substances by micro encapsulation Essential oils, carotenoids, flavors or even hydrophobic plant substances are challenging candidates in terms of formulation and process due to their chemical structure. Such substances are usually extremely sensitive to oxidation and to higher temperatures. For many applications, these substances are needed in solid formulations, for example in flavored teas and dessert mixes or as essential oils, neutral in taste and stable over time as additives in baby food. The micro encapsulation process combines the inclusion of hydrophobic substances in a matrix with granulation and drying. In the first process step, the oil is emulsified and encapsulated with an encapsulation material that protects against oxidation – such as modified starches, hydrocolloids or even proteins. Stabilization of the emulsion has a decisive influence on product quality. It prevents the microcapsules from being destroyed

Material Analysis for an Efficient Bulk Solids Conveyor Design
Discover how bulk material analysis and flow testing are key to designing bulk solids conveyors fully tailored to the production line. An efficient conveyor system for handling bulk solids requires one crucial step before selecting the type of conveyor. The most critical—and often most underestimated—step is the thorough analysis of the material to be conveyed. Deep knowledge of the product’s characteristics ensures not only a technically accurate solution but also greater durability, lower maintenance costs, and optimized industrial productivity. Understanding the material to be conveyed Each bulk material has unique physical properties that directly impact conveyor performance. A generic or modular design for a screw conveyor, bucket elevator, or chain conveyor may lead to operational failures, blockages, premature wear, or even unexpected production line shutdowns. The design must begin with a data-driven approach based on the product these conveyors will handle. Below are the key properties to study and the methodology: Technical characterization of the material * Bulk density *
