Capacitance level measurement in tanks Level sensors that work according to the capacitive measuring principle are used in different liquids, pastes, foams and slurries and can be implemented in all types and shapes of tanks, metallic or non-metallic. They have a very high level of precision in both conductive and non-conductive media. If you look at the whole thing in practice, it becomes clear how versatile the capacitive measuring principle is in very different process conditions. Proven technology For a steel-producing plant, a continuous level measurement, which works unaffected by steam or pressure fluctuations within a very small measuring range, was implemented with the NivoCapa® NC 8000 in water for gas cooling. One of the largest energy supply companies in the UK was looking for modern equipment for its northern dam with flexible metering technology. The electricity and natural gas supplier for local households and businesses has been focusing on hydropower generation for several years, in addition to wind power. The centrepiece of the dam’s hydropower plant is the installed wood chip system, which was recently implemented to curb pollution in the dam. Accumulated wood chips are transported to a designated storage area via a series of chain conveyors. These chain conveyors need to be monitored with modern and robust measurement technology. Especially in mills, where large quantities of grain, meal or flour are handled and processed, the risk of dust explosions is real – and often underestimated. This makes the use of reliable, ATEX/ IECEx-certified level measurement technology all the more important. Challenge: Level measurement in Ex zone 20/21 At a grain mill in Austria, intermediate storage in a 12-meter (39-foot) high silo had to be reliably monitored.
