Running Tracks made from Old Tyres 13.5 million tons of old tires per year are accumulated worldwide,
• 4.4 million tons of which in North America,
• 3.4 million tons of which in Europe, and
• 5.7 million tons of which in the rest of the world.
In Germany, 650,000 tons of old tires are accumulated per year, around 50% of which are used as secondary or substitute fuels in cement plants.
The other 50% are split up into their components:
• rubber 67%
• steel 19% (melted down in steel works)
• textiles 14% (used as substitute fuel).
The rubber is crushed and processed as granule or rubber powder. There are two main processing options: on one hand the modification of bitumen and asphalt, on the other hand the production of rubber tracks or rubber sheets.
The latter are used, among others, for footfall sound isolation beneath floors, as injury protection ground coverings for playgrounds, as indoor sports mats , or as outdoor running tracks. The running track in the Berlin Olympic
