Accurate and reliable screwdriving even in confined spaces At the AUTOMATICA DEPRAG presented their new cordless EC angled screwdrivers Every two years, technical experts from all round the world meet at the AUTOMATICA in Munich. This year, over an exhibition area covering 55,000 square metres, the leading European trade fair showcased automation solutions for every sector of industry. Experts from Germany and abroad visited the exhibition so that they could keep up to date with trends. Their aim is to manufacture better quality products faster and more cost-effectively. Many innovative ideas for production process optimisation attracted the interest of large numbers of visitors. Internationally renowned exhibitors used the opportunity to present their new and innovative automation and mechatronic products. Sales Manager of DEPRAG SCHULZ GMBH u. CO., Jürgen Hierold, took advantage of the AUTOMATICA to get a feel for the latest trends in automation. Technical journalist and editor, Trixy Schmidt, interviewed him. Question:

True RMS process calibrator The ELEKTRO LIJN HT8100 is a professional meter performing measurements as True RMS digital multimeter as well as process calibrator generating 0 – 20 mA and 4 – 20 mA DC current signals. As DMM the instrument carries out AC / DC / AC+DC voltage measurements up to 1000 V and AC / DC / AC+DC current measurements up to 1 A. Under the current generation mode, one can manually select between 0 – 20 mA and 4 – 20 mA as well as automatic ramps on output signal. The instrument is capable of measuring current absorbed by external transducers simulating a current adjustable within the whole measuring range. Vesx45fe The clamp, which is called the VESX45FE, is designed to make a secure connection to the conductive parts of FIBC Type C bags, liners and other flexible materials. The design is similar to the VESX45F, however, the plastic serrated block present on the VESX45F monitoring clamp, is made from stainless steel on the VESX45FE. This ensures complete conductivity throughout the body of the clamp. The VESX45FE will replace the VESX43 clamp, eventually used in conjunction with Earth-Rite® FIBC systems

70% less energy consumption than freeze dryers The new Glatt innodryer allows the most gentle drying of herbs and other temperature sensitive products. The valuable ingredients of the herbs are maintained during the drying. The energy consumption is only a fraction of conventional technologies. An entirely new and patented drying process has been developed by Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH in cooperation with innodrying GmbH. This process is especially designed for the most gentle drying of high-value herbs, saving not only form, texture and color but also the essential oils. These dried products are by far superior to products produced by conventional drying processes. During a two-year development period this has been proven for many herbs, e.g. basil, chives, tarragon and parsley. Currently the application is tested for mushrooms and additional high value temperature sensitive products. Compared to conventional freeze dryers the Glatt innodryer saves about 70% energy, resulting in low processing costs. In addition

Bohle: easy handling, continuous production and small footprint are the typical features of the products from Ennigerloh. With the BRC 100, a drying granulator is set to celebrate its world premiere at the ACHEMA 2012 in Frankfurt, revealing its typical Bohle genes. In the roller compactor fluid powders are processed into granules. The objective in the pharmaceutical industry is to process a granule with defined density or porosity for immediate tabeletting thereafter. The powder is fed via a dosing unit, compacted between two rollers with gaps ranging from 1 to 6 mm and discharged as scabs. The impact on the rollers, as well as the gap width are monitored sensorially and integrated into a control circuit to ensure continuous optimum process parameters. Cryogenic Grinding – Safe and Efficient with RETSCH’s CryoMill RETSCH presents the new CryoMill generation at this year’s ACHEMA! The CryoMill has been specially designed for cryogenic grinding. An integrated cooling system ensures that the grinding jar is continually cooled with liquid nitrogen before and during the grinding process. Thus the sample is embrittled and volatile components are preserved. Thanks to the Autofill System, liquid nitrogen is continually refilled in the exact amount which is required to keep the temperature at –196 °C. The user never gets into direct contact with the LN2 which makes operating the mill particularly safe. The new CryoMill achieves considerably improved grind sizes thanks to the increased oscillating frequency of 30 Hz. Another new feature is the possibility to store up to 9 SOPs. Further improvements include a reinforced housing, optimized liquid nitrogen duct and new accessories such as an adapter for 6 reaction

A newly emerging application for AVA mixers is the production of seed blends. AVA delivered the first compact system to an established German seed processing company (contract manufacturing). The centerpiece of the system is an AVA horizontal dryer HTC 350. The entire machine is made of stainless steel, material no. 1.4541. Additionally, we delivered the entire steel structure as well as the circuit and 5 movable containers for charging and draining including docking systems. The individual batch components are filled into a movable container, which docks with the HTC 350 in order to drain the components into the mixer. After the components have been mixed in a gentle mode, the batch is filled into a movable container docked with the mixer on the bottom side and brought to the barreling plant. The customer was convinced by the compactness of the plant, the low local requirements and the cost-effective design.

The perfect method to obtain a pure product which reduces the wear and tear on machinery. Using innovative classifiying procedures, materials of different densities can be separated. One example is the reduction of silicon or quartz – substances that lead to high wear and tear on industrial machinery like paper rollers or plastic extruders. Decreasing the amount of high-density materials like quartz (Mohs hardness 6.5) requires processing systems specially designed for difficult demands: such as DemiNo® the patented impact jet mill used for the deagglomeration up to Mohs hardness 9 and micronisation up to Mohs hardness 7 – including easily depositing and gluey substances. It can be flexibly equipped with a variety of impact elements (ceramic, cast and stainless steel, hard metal). With its rotational speed of only 120 m/s, it features low-energy consumption. A new sensor for estalishment of the load. To monitor the loading of tanks and silos a variety of load cells are available. A number of these has the disadvantage of only detecting whether the material inside the container is located above or below the sensor line. Other systems are indeed able to measure fill levels, the limitation however, is the surface of the material in the silo or tank. This surface depends on the product and is not necessarily representative of the true volume. Bulk loading and unloading for example, leaves a slope which may be asymmetrical. Typically bulk material will also vary in density when it enters the silo to the subsequent compacting as it settles. Fluids measuring, on the other hand, is effected by the formation of foam and/or the viscosity of the fluid against the container. There is a solution to this. By combining a special mounting kit with a specific load cell, it is possible to directly determined the content load of a silo or tank at the base of the container stilts.

The self-cleaning GORE-TEX antenna cover guarantees reliable, maintenance-free operation. For radar sensors, one simple rule applies: the higher the frequency, the more vulnerable the antenna is to buildup and dirt. In applications with extreme dust and buildup, the antenna system is often kept clean with compressed air. Compressed air, however, is an expensive resource. So in the search for a more efficient way to protect the parabolic and horn antennas of VEGAPULS 68 and SR 68 radar sensors against dust deposits, an alternative to cost-intensive compressed air was considered. Remote Radio-Frequency Level Indicator The Remote Auto-Set is a radio-frequency level indicator that allows single point level detection of most liquids and bulk granular materials such as powders, grain, sugar, cement etc… The remote version allows the programming and monitoring to be achieved at a distance of up to 100 metres between the control module and the transponder. The Remote version is recommended for situations where - the level probe is not easily accessible - regular recalibration is necessary i.e. for various products used in feeders etc - the level indicator is exposed to vibration and possible impact. - the product is at temperatures up to 250ºC The control module ATSR1V0A has a display and is simply programmed using push-buttons and switches. Rapid cleaning for multi-flexible production using one mixer More and more companies want to use one and the same mixer to produce multiple products. This approach not only saves having to invest in multiple mixers, companies can also put new products into production much more quickly. Bladel - NL, 10 May 2012 – In 2011, KSE received an order for building a complete micro dosing line in Scandinavia. The order contains multiple ALFRA dosing machines, ALFRA flexible silos, ALFRA dose&weigh software as well as the pneumatic transport. The different ordered parts are for supplying the existing mixing line of the factory. The complete new micro dosing line will be built against this. The process First the different raw materials will be transported in big bags or bags to 25 meters height through a lift before it’s emptied in the ALFRA Batch Bulk Transport (BBT). Then the ALFRA BBT transports the raw materials to various ALFRA silos, which unloads in different micro-dosing systems of ALFRA. From the dosing systems they are dosed in the sending vessel of the ALFRA pneumatic Transport (APT). Finally the APT blows the raw materials into the existing mix line. Dinnissen develops system for petrochemical industry Thick, highly viscous residual waste flows from the petrochemical industry that may also be contaminated with hard objects are very difficult to process. Because this residual waste often contains valuable pure metals, Dinnissen has developed a new purpose-built recovery system. The system covers the complete process from emptying the drums, containers or big bags right up to final packing of the purified metals. Special grinding unit processes residual waste into a homogenous material Certified waste flows from the petrochemical industry which are both highly viscous and contaminated with wood, stone and iron particles were almost impossible to process until recently.
