Technical cleaning of PFOA/PFDA contaminated foam concentrate systems
Natusch & Thiedemann specialises in the technical cleaning of tank installations and pipework. Due to the very specific limit value, this can best be described as "laboratory cleaning". Natusch & Thiedemann are specialised in the technical cleaning of PFOA / PFDA contaminated foam agent tank systems and raw pipelines. The term "technical cleaning" is not necessarily familiar to many people. However, based on the very specific threshold value, this term would have to be replaced by "laboratory cleaning". This is because the aim of cleaning is not only to clean the system, but to make it limit value-free. This means reducing the plant load from 500 or 1200 ug PFOA to less than 10 ug. It is easy to imagine that this is not an easy task from a technical point of view. 30ug per 1 litre of water cannot be detected by the human senses. Neither the sense of smell nor the sense of sight can detect an increased value. Taste, perhaps, but you should not try this with PFOA, because even small amounts of PFOA in the blood accumulate in the body over many years and can cause considerable damage. As a master company for silo cleaning and tank access technology, we

The easy way to correlation between sieve analysis and image analysis
This white paper describes how Dynamic Image Analysis can effectively replace sieve analysis and significantly reduce the user’s workload. Sieve analysis is still a standard method for routine determination of particle size distributions of powders and granulates. On the one hand, it is cost-efficient and apparently easily executed, but on the other hand, it is also prone to error and flawed by various inaccuracies. The time required for one analysis may add up to 15 -30 minutes, including weighing, sieving process and cleaning. The information gained is limited as the number of data points is defined by the number of available test sieves. In contrast, DIA delivers a high-resolution measurement result within 2 - 3 minutes which contains additional information on particle shape and is generated automatically. Not surprisingly, some systematic differences can be observed in the results generated by different measurement techniques. In this article, these systematic differences are discussed for DIA and sieve analysis using application examples with various materials and particle shapes. Finally, we present

Fluidization as solution for flow problems Fluidization of bulk materials with SIPERM aeration components as a sloution to several flow problems
Fluidization as solution for flow problems
Fluidization of bulk materials with SIPERM aeration components as a sloution to several flow problems Storage, mixing and discharge of bulk materials with average particle sizes of less than 0.2 mm frequently causes problems because these bulk materials do not flow freely and therefore are almost impossible to discharge. They tend to agglomerate and form bridges and tunnels, particularly around the silo outlet, thereby obstructing the free flow of the material from the storage vessel. Such low flowable materials include fine plastic powders, flour, pigments, soot, cement, pesticides etc. Fluidization the solution A proven solution for the problem-free handling of bulk solids with average grain sizes between 10 and 200 µm is the fluidization of the material using pneumatic aeration units made from highly porous SIPERM® materials. You can chose between * Custom-made aeration bottoms, cones or inserts which we manufacture to your specifications * Plate material for adapting to your own systems * Standard aeration pads which can easily be retrofitted into existing systems

UWT Radar Level measurement at the speed of light
Learn more about our radar level transmitters to reliably measure solid and liquid materials in silos and tanks. We have solutions for the most diverse industries. Our radar sensors include a non-contact series NivoRadar® 3000 and a guided wave radar serie NivoGuide®3000 for solis and NivoGuide® 8000 for liquids. Electromagnetic waves form the basis of level measurement with radar. A radar sensor emits a focussed electromagnetic wave that is reflected by objects as an echo and is then evaluated by the sensor. In addition to free-radiating radar sensors, the radar category also includes those based on guided microwave technology, which are referred to as guided radar, TDR (time domain reflectometry) or also GWR (guided wave radar) sensors. The fundamental difference between free-radiating and guided radar sensors is the way the electromagnetic waves reach the medium to be measured. While free-radiating radar sensors use special types of antennas to transmit the waves in the direction of the material without contact, guided radar sensors require a probe (rod or cable) as

Bulk technology is not rocket science; it’s more difficult
Rules for the Characterisation of Bulk Materials Bulk technology is not rocket science: it’s not that easy. Moreover, rocket scientists agree. A recent paper by NASA: - ‘Granular Materials and the Risks They Pose for Success on the Moon and Mars’, summarizes the uncertainty that surrounds many aspects of bulk handing. The NASA paper states: ‘Working with soil, sand, powders, ores, cement, etc. and using hoppers, are so routine, that it seems straightforward to do it on the moon and mars as we do it on earth. This paper brings to the fore how little these processes are understood and the millennia-long trial-and-error practices that lead to today’s massive over-design, high failure rate, and extensive incremental scaling up of industrial processes because of the inadequate predictive tools for design’. This state of affairs was also confirmed by two well-cited Rand reports that compared the performance of a number of new solids handling installations with others handling liquids and gasses. It should

When it’s too little for the belt scale
MTS developed the CDW, the conveyor discharge weigher, for low and medium flow rates from 200 to 5,000 kg/h. Weighing is very accurate because it is static. The recovery and recycling of valuable materials into raw materials is becoming increasingly important in order to conserve resources and reduce the final disposal of waste. Special weighing solutions are required in such applications in order to precisely record the individual recyclable materials with low flow rates. Recyclable materials from waste should not only be separated by type, but also precisely recorded in terms of quantity. Belt conveyors are usually used to transport the waste. The use of a built-in belt scale for weighing the recovered recyclable materials during transport on the belts is an obvious solution - but often fails as a solution, especially in the area of slag processing and separation, due to the low flow rates. The MAV Group operates plants at several locations in Germany for the processing of waste incineration grate ashes, which also contain valuable metals. These valuable materials are separated in several process stages and returned

Mixing moisture-sensitive powder batters
The continuously operating Type CM CoriMix® Ringlayer Mixer from Lödige Process Technology is the ideal solution for moisture-sensitive powder batter mixes. Moisture-sensitive powder batter mixes, such as those used to make crisps and other savoury snacks, require a high degree of homogeneity combined with precisely controlled and extremely stable moisture levels. The continuously operating Type CM CoriMix® Ringlayer Mixer from Lödige Process Technology is the ideal solution for this demanding process engineering task. The machine must also comply with all current hygiene and ATEX specifications. Powdered batters for crisps, for example, consist of potato powder and other powdered ingredients. Water is then added to the dry premix. This process step is decisive for the quality of the end product. As only when the defined degree of moisture of the batter mix is guaranteed precisely and continuously, it can be deep-fried or baked perfectly and with a stable shape. The special challenge here is that the "return material", which is produced when the crips are cut out, is also continuously fed into the mixer. The task of

Increased soda production with modern screening machines from RHEWUM
Sodium carbonate is difficult to screen as its hydrophilic properties cause agglomerations. RHEWUM’s high quality sieving technology increases production. Soda ash is obtained from sustainable production sources, such as the processing of wood. Soda ash is an indispensable raw material in partticular for the glass industry, but also used as a bleaching agent in the chemical industry and not least in the lye of Bavarian pretzels. The demand for high-quality soda ash is high. The quality of the soda granulate is significantly influenced by the performance, and thus the quality, of the screening machine in use. Soda ash is considered to be a difficult material to sieve, which easily sticks to the screening mesh and tends to form lumps due to its hydrophilic properties. The screening mesh can quickly become clogged and the entire production come to a standstill. Thus, the reliable supply of soda ash for important industrial sectors, and with it the capacity of soda ash producing plants, depends on the screening machine. With the RHEWUM WA, RHEWUM offers a state-of-the-art screening machine with direct excitation of the

Fast, paperless asset safety inspections (Case Study)
A very large chemicals processer increased the efficiency of asset safety inspections with inspection templates and automated reporting using Brady’s reliable Unitags and SafeTrak software. Challenges: Easily manage thousands of asset inspections A large chemical processing plant was keeping track of asset inspections on paper. With thousands of ladders, handrails and floor gratings on the list of assets that need regular safety inspection, the paper trail became exceedingly complex and time intensive to manage. The plant was already using Brady’s Unitag to communicate which assets were inspected, and deemed safe, or out of use. To keep employees safe and the facility compliant in an efficient way, a solution was needed to replace time-consuming handwritten inspection reports. Solutions: A digital asset inspection trail Brady proposed the SafeTrak software to replace the entire inspection paper trail with an online tool. All assets that need inspection can be set up in SafeTrak to make inspection planning and follow-up a lot more practical. Asset inspections can be planned at regular intervals, and to each type of asset a standard or custom inspection

Expanding the application possibilities of passive isolation valves
Effective protection for industrial plants: putting a stop to incipient explosions in the process. Constructive explosion protection through pressure relief - even flameless if required - is an essential factor in minimising the risk of secondary explosions and flame jet ignitions between two or more process vessels connected by piping. For this purpose, IEP Technologies, the safety experts of the HOERBIGER Group, has developed the IsoFlap check valve. The passive decoupling valve enables effective, passive explosion decoupling for plants with combustible dusts to prevent explosion propagation into upstream plant areas. The protection system fulfils the requirements of DIN EN 16447 and can be ordered and delivered immediately in various sizes between DN 100 and DN 1000. Up to DN 200, the IsoFlap valves are also certified for St 2 and metallic dusts. The IsoFlap and IsoFlap-M both have a durable carbon steel valve body and a flap blade of high quality stainless steel alloy. The valve is designed to withstand high maximum reduced explosion pressures (Pred) listed

Hygienic design in process engineering
The comprehensive approach of hygienic design takes into account construction details as well as production peripherals and employee behaviour. Process technology machines and machine line parts in pharmaceutical production or food manufacturing, including those from Lödige Process Technology, are known to have to meet the highest hygienic standards. But how can these be implemented in practice? In other words: What are the potential risks and how can they be systematically avoided? Answers are provided by the comprehensive approach of hygienic design, which takes into account construction details as well as production peripherals and employee behaviour. Hygienic design in process technology The example of mixing shows what hygienic design in process technology means in concrete terms: Mixing is one of the elementary processes in the process industry. Mixers guarantee the quality of food products as well as the consistent dosage of ingredients or pharmaceutically active components. An important aspect of hygienic design is therefore the cleanable layout of the mixer, including all parts coming in contact

Magnetic filter for paper pulp
Goudsmit Magnetics has recently made a series of magnetic filters that are suitable for removing baling wire from paper pulp. These steel wires hold bales of cellulose together and –when everything goes as it should– are removed before t This is done in an automated process followed by human inspection. In practice, the process is never perfect and steel wire still occasionally ends up in the paper pulp. This causes damage to the pulp processing equipment, as well as production downtime. Placing a magnet in the paper line prevents equipment damage, downtime and therefore significant losses. MAGNETIC FILTER The magnetic filters for paper pulp have a large bore for product flow, ranging from DN100 to DN400. This passage is completely surrounded with very strong magnetic bars with a high flux density (also referred to as the Gauss value), making it possible to capture the steel wire even at a relatively high flow rate. In addition, the magnetic insert is fitted with a sturdy guide and pneumatic rods, which simplifies handling for operators. This is not only ergonomic but also ensures that regular inspection takes place.” It is surprising that magnetic filters are not yet standard in paper lines.

VdS-certified fire protection concept for belt dryers
For the first time, T&B is preparing a certified protection concept in cooperation with VdS The drying of materials is often the prerequisite for their further processing. The drying process, i.e. the thermal removal of water and other liquids, makes the dried goods durable, mixable, grindable or otherwise usable for further process steps. Drying processes have been industrial standard for many decades already. The first belt dryer in Europe, for example, went into operation as long ago as 1907. These days, belt dryers are used in a wide range of different branches. Examples include belt dryers for timber, pharmaceuticals, food, plastics, wastewater sludge and many other organic substances. All these substances have one thing in common: they are combustible and, in combination with a belt dryer, result in a high fire load. The importance of belt dryers in industrial applications has increased significantly over the past few years. Generally, standard series belt dryers have a modular design. They are made up of a product feeding module, a drying module

Fluid bed systems: continuous, batch, or a hybrid?
Glatt series with plant solutions that enable both types of process control The discussion pro and contra continuous versus batch production is conducted as if there were only these two alternatives. However, with the Glatt series, plant solutions have long been available that enable both types of process control. A look at the requirements of two customers shows which issues are really decisive. The advantages of a continuous system are undisputed: A continuous production plant delivers very good, reproducible product quality with extremely high efficiency during continuous operation, since process interruptions due to batch changes and cleaning intervals are eliminated. Small quantities, frequent product and formulation changes, limited batch sizes, traceability or longer coating processes speak in favor of batch production. However, as soon as customer-side manufacturing conditions or specific product properties come into focus - usually the USP of every ingredient manufacturer - the really important arguments come into play: On the
