Expanding the application possibilities of passive isolation valves

Effective protection for industrial plants: putting a stop to incipient explosions in the process.

Constructive explosion protection through pressure relief - even flameless if required - is an essential factor in minimising the risk of secondary explosions and flame jet ignitions between two or more process vessels connected by piping.

For this purpose, IEP Technologies, the safety experts of the HOERBIGER Group, has developed the IsoFlap check valve. The passive decoupling valve enables effective, passive explosion decoupling for plants with combustible dusts to prevent explosion propagation into upstream plant areas. The protection system fulfils the requirements of DIN EN 16447 and can be ordered and delivered immediately in various sizes between DN 100 and DN 1000. Up to DN 200, the IsoFlap valves are also certified for St 2 and metallic dusts.

The IsoFlap and IsoFlap-M both have a durable carbon steel valve body and a flap blade of high quality stainless steel alloy. The valve is designed to withstand high maximum reduced explosion pressures (Pred) listed in the specification section below. During operation the flap blade is held open by the process airflow, in case of an explosion the pressure front closes and locks in place the blade, mitigating the propagation of the flame and pressure to the upstream equipment.

Available as an option is the IsoFlap-M Interface Module, a PCB based system monitoring device designed for use with the IsoFlap-M version of the flap valve. The Interface Module includes intrinsically safe barriers for monitoring the IsoFlap-M sensors, provides for process interlock functions, and includes diagnostic and maintenance functions. The Interface Panel operates on either 120 or 230 VAC.

Company information

IEP Technologies GmbH
IEP Technologies GmbH
IEP Technologies is the worldwide leading provider of explosion protection systems and services. For over 60 years we have provided protection solutions that can suppress, isolate and vent combustible dust or vapor explosions in process industries. Innovations by IEP Technologies IEP Technologies can point to thousands of IEP systems installed over the last 60 years together with the unmatched expertise of our scientists and engineers and a vast database of explosion protection test results and practical applications. We have led the way with a number of notable innovations: * The establishment of a testing facility and calibrated test method for precise and repeatable results to be used in design verification; * The evolution of computer-aided design for protection of vessels through determination of expected reduced explosion pressures for each vessel in a protected plant complex; * The development of full scale explosion protection trials to validate design support tools; * The use of full scale application design trials to provide data to quantify the reliability of system designs. * The introduction of product innovations, such as a unique bimodal powder suppressant, a false activation immune dynamic pressure detector and multi-zone configurable control equipment; * Advanced calculation tool for the design of connection protection – delivering clear guidance on the effective placement of isolation valves or chemical extinguishing barriers; * Unique methodology for quantifying the performance (reliability) of explosion protection measures to improve system design robustness; Today, IEP Technologies successfully suppresses 2 to 4 industrial explosions every month.
