For the weighing of smallest components the solids solutions group has developed a new scale with swivelling bowl. The compact device offers a high weighing accuracy of up to 1 gram at a resolution of up to 0.5 grams. Different sizes cover a weighing range up to 50 kg. Preferably the scale is installed in a protection casing in order to exclude external impacts and to prevent the emission of dust to the surroundings during feed and discharge. The calibration as well as a frequent functional check are performed automatically. The 1-component metering module installed on board is provided with a Profibus interface for a direct connection to the supervising process automation. After input of the set weight the metering module is able to meter the component on its own by an external metering device. Das Gerät ermöglicht selbst bei kohäsiven Stoffen eine sehr hohe Dosiergenauigkeit durch seine Feinstdosiereinrichtung mit pulsationsfreiem Abwurf. Der konstante Füllgrad der Dosierschnecke trägt bei zu höchster Genauigkeit und Dosierkonstanz. Das Dosiergerät kann für Reinigungszwecke leicht zerlegt werden und ist äußerst wartungsfreundlich. Alle Antriebe sind leicht zugänglich angeordnet. Für Anwendungen in der Lebensmittelindustrie ist das Dosiergerät GMP – gerecht – und FDA konform ausgeführt. Für staubexplosionsgefährdete Produkte ist das Gerät grundsätzlich für Zone 21 geeignet.

Symposium Bioplastics shows increasing market opportunities More than 100 delegates from primarily SME’s attended the symposium “Bioplastics: growing opportunities for your company” on June 5th in Ede, Netherlands. This symposium was organised by the Platform Bio-based Business in collaboration with the Dutch branche organisation for compostable plastics (BCPN). At the symposium it was concluded that bioplastics are now experiencing a definite market breakthrough, and, in the Netherlands, are now widely used in such consumer applications as fresh food packaging, waste and carrier bags and disposable cups. Under chairmanship of Platform BBB’s board member Dr. Barbara de Klerk the state of the art of bioplastics was presented. Karin Molenveld of Wageningen UR gave an overview of commercially available bioplastics, their material and processing characteristics as well as typical uses. Thrust blenders are the most suitable for gentle mixing of products with broad particle size distribution. For a functional-drink-application a ribbon type blender with 3000 litres useful volume was built. The blender has a single shaft. The mixing tools are ribbons, which are arranged screw-like at two circumferences. The inner ribbon with the smaller diameter promotes the product from the centre outward and the outer ribbon again inward. Pushing the ribbons through the bulk product provides the mixing. For application in the foodstuffs industry an EHEDG compliant design is used. The materials of construction were carefully selected and high quality surfaces were realized; furthermore, bolted connections were avoided as far as possible. Special attention was paid to dead-space-free constructions at the discharge, where a metallic sealing was implemented. The machine type PST can be delivered as a fixed or mobile unit, in 6 different sizes for a capacity of 100 to 24000 kg/h. The unit allows the mixing of 1 to 3 liquids with a solid powder or granules of a size not exceeding 5 mm. All components are pre-assembled upon a base frame entirely in stainless steel. The main liquid is pumped at a fixed or variable speed to build up the pressure. The feeding pump is selected according to the characteristics of the liquids The Large jet feed injector, generates a negative pressure (vacuum) up to 800mbar by a Venturi. The vacuum is relative to the flow speed of the liquid. This negative pressure sucks the powder into the liquid and mixes it with the main liquid flow. Additional liquids, like aroma or colorants can be added directly into the injector by a feed stud. The dosing unit for the powder is selected according to the flow properties of the solids. The PST system can be operated in batch or continuous way.
