Schiltach / Navarra, March 2025 – Within the context of a current project to equip a 500-kW prototype with instrumentation, technology company Nordex Electrolyzers has opted for sensor solutions from VEGA. The Nordex Group subsidiary develops high-performance electrolyzers for the industrial production of green hydrogen in Spain. Challenging process conditions Its alkaline pressure electrolysis system is specially designed for operation with fluctuating wind power. The prototype, which produces over 10 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, is installed in a modular container system and can be deployed flexibly worldwide. The VEGAPULS 6X radar sensor in the new high-temperature version offers a solution for processes with temperatures of up to 450 °C. There are applications that push level measurement to its limits. Until recently, this included a process called iron briquetting, where it was almost impossible to achieve reliable measuring results due to extreme temperatures. That has changed. KG Maschinenfabrik-Eisengießerei in Heide manufactures castings of iron, steel and non-ferrous metals, sometimes in small batches, sometimes as individual castings of various sizes. The foundry sand required for this is transported, still hot, to large silos after use. Here it is stored and cooled until it is needed again for further processing steps. In order to reliably measure the level in the silos and thus their total content, reliable level measurement is required. Until now, guided radar sensors were used for this purpose. These old sensors, however, intermittently failed to transmit the measurement signals: Due to the very long cable probes, they had difficulties measuring in the sand and sometimes even stopped working completely. In 2004 VEGA Grieshaber introduced VEGAPULS 68, the first radar sensor specially developed for level measurement of bulk solids. With a measuring range up to 70 m and wide temperature and pressure ranges (200 °C and 40 bar), it represented a real novelty in level measurement of bulk solids and has since established itself very well on the market. To close the remaining gap of standard applications with smaller measuring ranges and lower process demands, an additional instrument version, VEGAPULS 67, will be introduced at POWTECH 2007. The new VEGAPULS 67 finds application in areas where, for reasons of economy, ultrasonic instruments or capacitive probes were used until now. A new, innovative antenna system of plastic makes it possible to offer VEGAPULS 67 at a considerably lower price. Yet the tried-and-true pulse radar technology, with its high signal sensitivity and echo evaluation specially optimised for bulk solids, remains the heart of the instrument. The

VEGAVIB and VEGAWAVE are vibrating level switches for level detection of bulk solids. VEGAVIB operates with a vibrating rod, VEGAWAVE with a tuning fork. The central component of both sensors is the piezo-driven vibrating element. This measuring technique does not require adjustment with medium and offers comprehensive fault monitoring up to SIL 2 (according to IEC 61508). These sensors are also available for dust Ex areas of zone 20. With its tuning fork, VEGAWAVE is the ideal solution for applications in powdery media and bulk solids of small grain size. Its robust configuration also allows applications as minimum level detection in heavy bulk solids such as cement or flour. Even in case of buildup, the VEGAWAVE sensors demonstrate their advantages over the vibrating rod. VEGAWAVE works in bulk solids from a density of 0.008 g/cm³ (8 g/l).
