Video: How do sensors contribute to cyber security?

The VEGAPULS 6X radar level sensor has been designed according to the latest IT security standard IEC 62443-4-2.
In view of the increasing digitalisation in industry, an extremely important point is effective protection against cyber attacks.

In industry, production facilities are becoming more and more interconnected and use digital status retrieval on all devices and systems. This makes them vulnerable in a new way.

To fulfil the highest cyber security standards currently available in the process industry, the VEGAPULS 6X radar level sensor has been designed according to the latest IT security standard IEC 62443-4-2.

During a walk through the VEGA IT department, Jürgen and Stefan explain what has to be considered already in the development stage in order to create a secure sensor.

Contactless and maintenance-free measurement of bulk solids
The Friedrich Köster GmbH & Co. KG Maschinenfabrik-Eisengießerei in Heide manufactures castings of iron, steel and non-ferrous metals, sometimes in small batches, sometimes as individual castings of various sizes. The foundry sand required for this is transported, still hot, to large silos after use. Here it is stored and cooled until it is needed again for further processing steps. In order to reliably measure the level in the silos and thus their total content, reliable level measurement is required. Until now, guided radar sensors were used for this purpose. These old sensors, however, intermittently failed to transmit the measurement signals: Due to the very long cable probes, they had difficulties measuring in the sand and sometimes even stopped working completely. The necessary repairs could only be carried out when the silos were empty. This was not only inconvenient, it also caused delays in the production process again and again. VEGAPULS 31 radar sensors

DCCC: Searching and finding process data
Together with the Digital Data Chain Consortium, VEGA wants to further advance the digital twin of its instruments Transparent data exchange between manufacturers and users is an almost limitless topic, also in the process industry. To make progress in this area, many individual solutions, including some proprietary ones, have to be brought together under one roof. The Digital Data Chain Consortium, with VEGA as a founding member, wants to make documents and data accessible to all by means of a digital type label. Many different manufacturers What looks like a complete system out on the factory floor rarely turns out to be a unified whole when viewed up close: In every production system there are mechanical, electrical, electronic and software components from many different manufacturers. A complex multiplicity that makes itself felt particularly when things are not running smoothly. For example when a sensor needs to be re-parameterised, a valve sealed or a fuse replaced. How efficiently a machine or even an entire system can be repaired or serviced depends largely on how quickly

VEGA Tools app for easier and faster access to measurement data
Sensor operation via smartphone and tablet: new functions to simplify proof testing. On the road, at home, at work – the smartphone is always with us. Mobile devices are now standard equipment in industrial plants as well. This allows machines and production systems to be operated more efficiently and, in many cases, more safely: for example, by enabling the system status to be called up remotely, or by eliminating the need to climb to the top of a tall vessel, or enter a hazardous zone to read sensor measurements. ✅ The combination of reliable and simple The productivity and efficiency of machines and entire plants always depends on how quickly and conveniently their status data can be visualised. The VEGA Tools app is mobile-based software that makes exactly this task easy. In machines and production systems, VEGA sensors deliver data that are not only needed for direct control. Some of these individual process values can also provide decisive information for planning maintenance work or eliminating faults. For almost six years, the
