With the GSME and HOTSPOT detectors from REMBE, an artificial intelligence has been created that detects fire and explosion events at an early stage. The GSME detector is an artificial nose, ”trained” for pyrolysis - popularly known as smoldering gases, while the HOTSPOT detector represents an artificial eye that already detects surface temperature changes of 1 ° C. Downtime is lost time – and it is also boring. This is why the busy engineers at REMBE are constantly working to develop new products. They love finding answers to their customer’s unsolved problems. The EXKOP® system provides safe, economic and easy explosion-, spark and flame front isolation. The quench valves protect interconnected equipment by high speed closure of a fast acting pinch valve. The quench valve is triggered by 100 % reliable signal from the maintenance-free triple-section rupture disc, the Q-Rohr® or by IR-, pressure or temperature sensors. The complete system is failsafe due to an integrated pressure storage tank and self-monitoring controller. The damper absorbs the enormous repulsive forces of the explosion energy and guides the flames and shock wave in the desired direction. When assessing the functional safety of a protection system it is above all important to ensure that its reliability matches the risks of a plant that is in danger. Such a SIL classification is based on a risk assessment that covers the probability of failure in a safety setup within a given scenario and the potential severity of any resulting damage. The defined tables and values, which can be found, for instance, in EN ISO 13849, lead to the required SIL level for the relevant (electronic) component. The higher the probability of occurrence and/or the potential severity of damage, the higher should be the requirements on the electronic componentry and also on the necessary SIL level. Safety valves provide numerous advantages, opening when pressure becomes too high and automatically closing after venting. However, an immense drawback is that safety valves are very maintenance-intensive, and present the disadvantage of not providing leak tightness. In turn, this results in huge material wastage and rising emission rates. Just in the Netherlands, this results in an annual loss of raw materials loss of gases and liquids of approximately 106,000 tons. With a calculated average price of 700,00 EUR/ton, this results in a loss of 75 mio. EUR/year. When combustible dusts or gases meet up with oxygen and ignition sources in a facility, the worst case could be an explosion; followed by annihilating energies that are released, with devastating impacts.
