Protective screening is probably one of the most common screening procedures in industrial manufacturing processes. You will learn why you shouldn’t do without protective screening, and what makes a good protective screen using the example of the reworked Engelsmann screening machine JEL Fix II. Why protective screening? Protective screens are used to eliminate disruptive foreign objects and impurities from bulk goods. These foreign objects can be plastic residues, for example, or metal parts such as screws which end up in the product by accident and can cause contamination. Lost knives for cutting bagged goods or protective gloves have also been found in products. To ensure a consistently high quality in the end product, these foreign objects must be separated before the product is put into its sales packaging. When processing bulk solids, agglomerates can occur that impair the production process. How can they be separated or dissolved as efficiently as possible? Among other alternatives, agglomerates can either be separated with sieving technology or dissolved with the help of passing sieves. This depends mainly on how solid the agglomerates are or how difficult it is to separate the adhering product particles from each other. Passing screens are used when the product to be processed tends to compact. This interferes with further processing in downstream production stages and has a quality-reducing effect. These screening machine, such as the JEL PS passing screen, use a rotor with passing bars to pick up the lumpy product and pass it through the screen mesh. The product falls out below the screen in the desired degree of fragmentation and can be conveyed to the following processing stage. Individually tailored to the needs of our pharmaceutical customer: a big bag emptying station for lactose, with various options for connecting downstream processes On the one hand, the big bag emptying station is to be connected to a pneumatic conveying system for silo feeding. On the other hand, the station was to be used for dust-free filling of containers. And that without time-consuming conversion measures and under the strictest hygienic conditions. To ensure high product and process quality during big bag emptying, an additional protective screen and a metal separator were integrated. Operation, inspection and maintenance of the system are carried out via a VA platform provided by the customer. The stable frame construction of the big bag emptying station is made entirely of stainless steel. A lifting cross is located in the upper area of the emptying station. With this, the big bags can be picked up by the operating personnel, lifted into the emptying station and brought into the emptying position. The new JEL Konti II CTM vibrating screen is suitable for almost all common screening tasks that have to be carried out under containment conditions. Also the change of the screen insert works without breakage of the containment. Products with a high hazard potential, such as highly active ingredients or toxic chemicals, can often only be processed under containment conditions. And protective screening, oversize and fine particle separation or classifying screening are also common practice for these products. In screening processes, the containment or the plant environment are always at risk when the machine has to be opened - as when changing the screen feeder. To enable screening processes beyond isolators and full protective suits to be carried out more economically, more simply and still safely under containment conditions, Engelsmann has developed a new containment screen in which the screen feeder can be changed without breakage of the containment and in just a few steps. The patent pending screen is now being launched on the market and will be demonstrated to the public for the first time at the Powtech trade show in Nuremberg.
