ADB adjustable depth bearing temperature sensors

The ADB series have been designed to allow the depth of the sensor to be adjustable depending on your application. Versions are available with probe lengths of 50, 100, 200 and 300 mm. Elevator handling recycled asphalt planings

Elevator design for recycled asphalt planings (RAP). Recommending speed, power, shaft & casing sizes, and component specs (SPS steel buckets & NBR belting) Challenge Asphalt is made from a mixture of aggregates, binder and filler, and is commonly used in constructing and maintaining roads surfaces. When the surface layer of tarmacked areas is removed, the resulting waste material known as planings, can be recycled and reused. The newly developed AM Nyrim elevator buckets offered more robust, higher capacity throughput without needing to carry out any drive changes. 4B recently assisted the largest UK producer of rape / canola oil in upgrading their main silo feed elevator to incorporate 4B’s advanced anti- static AM Nyrim elevator buckets. Increasing capacity by reducing material build-up in the buckets and improving hygiene throughout the production process. CHALLENGE Largest UK producer of rape / canola oil required an increase in the tonnage capacity of the elevator along with steps to improve hygiene and reduce the risk of salmonella contamination throughout their production facility. Oil and dust sticks to the traditional fabricated steel buckets building up and reducing capacity of the elevator. Over time these deposits grow and can reduce capacity of the buckets. These then start to break off in lumps and can contaminate the production process further along the refining process. The 4B Milli-Speed Switch, a loop powered 4 - 20 mA analogue output speed switch for PLC, DCS or stand-alone controllers is now available as ATEX version. The Milli-Speed switch is designed to detect belt slip, belt underspeed, stop motion, low speed or zero speed on bucket elevators, conveyors, airlocks, mixers, fans, grinders and many other rotating machines. An inductive sensing device located in the nose of the Milli-Speed enclosure will detect a metal target. This target can be an existing bolt head or device attached to a shaft, such as 4B’s Whirligig® sensor mount. During installation, the Milli-Speed is set to the normal running RPM by simple magnetic calibration. Chain Conveyor Upgrade - Corrosive Products

Problem with chain conveyors in corrosive application solved through use of the right components. Customer was struggling with their conveyors transporting a corrosive by-product of crude oil processing. The chain was breaking and wearing fast, causing much downtime. 4B heavy duty links with corrosion-resistant pins and circlips improved the conveyor life by at least 50%. Challenge The customer was struggling with the life of the chain inside their chain conveyors. The chain conveyors where transporting a by-product of crude oil processing and wearing extremely fast. The wear was mainly due to the corrosive nature of the product and the strength of the chain installed. The corrosion was wearing the chain links and pins quite rapidly and the low chain strength lead to rapid elongation of the links. These 2 issues combined resulted in many chain breaks and a lot of production time loss to maintenance on the conveyors. SOLUTION Use of 4B142HAD chain links with pins in AISI420 and circlips in AISI304. These pins had a higher resistance to corrosion and the

4B WDA sensor used as solution to monitor chain slack or breakage By using a WDA sensor in combination with a speed relay, ferrous steel flights or bolts on plastic paddles are used to monitor for broken or slack chain issues on drag conveyors. Elevator Re-Design from Grain to "Green Malt"

Brewing & Malting: Elevator Design Improvements Challenge To utilise an existing Grain Elevator to transport “green malt”. After installation it was apparent the elevator was problematic and not functioning as expected. The installed buckets were CCS127 buckets, which replaced the obsolete J127 HDP buckets which were originally installed. After some discussion with 4B, the prognosis was the pulley may be too small for the projection of the CCS12x7 bucket. This was expected to be cured by installing CCS 12x6 but the problem still persisted although not as bad. SOLUTION After a site visit to inspect what they actually had, it was apparent the elevator was set up to transport free flowing grain. This setup was incorrect for the handling of green malt, which by nature is wet and sticky and does not flow well. The conclusion was the product was not fully discharging into the outlet but was in fact falling down the return leg back into the boot. 4B recommended two minor alterations to solve this problem. Underspeed Sensor for bucket elevators, conveyors and other rotating machinery The M300 Slipswitch is an easy-to-use inductive proximity shaft speed monitoring device with an adjustable 0 - 30 second start-up delay, all housed in a 30 mm diameter moulded body. The self-contained unit has a single set point, which signals when the shaft speed has dropped by 20% of normal running speed. It is used for detecting dangerous slow down and underspeed conditions on conveyors, bucket elevators, air locks, mixers, fans, grinders and many other machines. No connection is necessary between the sensor and the equipment being monitored. The proximity sensor detects a stud or bolt mounted on a shaft, or other suitable target. Ideally, the target should be of ferrous metal, but non-ferrous metal will be detected at a shorter range. Maximum range of ferrous targets is 8 mm (5/16”) and for non-ferrous targets is 5 mm (6/16”), assuming a 20 mm (3/4”) diameter target. Smaller targets may be used but operating distances will be reduced.

WDB7 bearing temperature sensor

Lug style surface temperature sensor The WDB7 series is a lug style NTC thermistor or platinum RTD (PT100) type for continuous temperature monitoring. It is designed to bolt directly onto a bearing housing, motor, gearbox, or machine casing. The mounting hole is M8 which can be drilled out up to M10 diameter. The sensor can be connected to a PLC or to a hazard monitoring system, such as 4B’s T500 Hotbus Elite, Watchdog Elite, or T400 Elite. Rub Block vs. Touchswitch

Choosing the right belt alignment sensor Belt misalignment is a common problem in belt conveyors and bucket elevators. When the belt is severely misaligned it can cause damage to the machine casing while generating dangerous heat in dust hazard environments. Two typical methods of detecting belt misalignment are the rub block and the Touchswitch. The Rub Block consists of soft brass with an embedded temperature sensor. The sensor alarms when the brass heats to the trip temperature. Three main drawbacks exist for this sensor. First, by the time the brass heats, the belt has already been misaligning for a period of time. Second, the belt could periodically rub against the brass and move away, wearing through the rub block without ever giving an alarm, leaving you unprotected. Finally, there is no simple way to test the rub block without introducing heat into a potentially hazardous environment. The Touchswitch design addresses these 3 issues. Mechanical belt misalignment sensor Belt misalignment on an elevator is a problem that is difficult to solve because it needs to be adapted for each elevator and type of elevator. When traditional techniques are used such as inductive, magnetic and capacitance sensors, different factors need to be considered: elevator size, bucket size, bucket type (steel, stainless steel, “plastic”, aluminium…), type of transported product, because in this case it is the buckets that the sensors detect. This is not always easy and sometimes difficult to realize. The TOUCHSWITCH is a new type of stainless steel sensor that has been designed to solve the problem of belt misalignment detection in zone 20 on conveyors and especially on elevators. The Touchswitch reacts to the pressure exerted on its front cover by the misaligned belt or pulley. The sensor communicates with a relay contact which triggers an alarm or stops the machine. The sensor is easy to adjust and can be used with pressures between 2 and 5 kg.

4B Bulldog

Belt Alignment & Rip Detection Switch 4B have launched the new 4B Bulldog belt alignment and rip detection switch. This electro-mechanical system has been designed to detect dangerous misalignment of the conveyor and also detection of belt tear damage. The switch will detect horizontal misalignment of belts when contact is made with the roller; the roller arm will be forced to pivot by the belt activating a switch at 15º to trigger an alarm, and 30º to trigger a shut down procedure of the conveyor. The sensors are usually installed in pairs on opposite sides of the belt. A steel flexible wire is set below the running conveyor belt approx 20-30mm attached by a rare earth magnet at each end. If the belt is ripped or damaged the wire is pulled away releasing the magnet connection which in turn will activate a switch. Adjustable Depth Bearing Temperature Sensors (ADB)

4B’s adjustable depth bearing (ADB) temperature sensors have been designed to allow the depth of the probe to be adjustable depending on the application. The ADB series are available with three standard probe lengths of 2, 4 or 8 inches (50, 100 and 200mm), and screw directly into a bearing housing through the existing grease zerk thread. There is no need to remove the sensor for bearing lubrication since each sensor is fitted with its own grease zerk. RLI "Shaker"

Rotary Level Indicator 4B Braime have launched a new type of rotary level indicator, the RLI “Shaker”. A rotary paddle switch,to detect high / low levels of bulk granular solids in bins, tanks and silos, the RLI "Shaker" can also be used to detect plug conditions in spouts, where long life and failsafe detection is required. Utilizing a unique stepper motor drive, the RLI “Shaker” rotates clockwise, then counter-clockwise and then shakes to shed any excess material build up.
