Precision That Lasts: UWT Level Sensors Prove 35-Year Durability

After three decades in continuous operation, a recent site inspection of five plastic granule silos revealed that UWT’s level sensors, manufactured in 1990, still provide flawless measurement signals for the plastics industry.

Solving Inefficiency in Granule Storage Management

At an industrial facility with 9-meter silos for plastic granules, operators struggled with unreliable level data for years. This lack of transparency forced reactive ordering rather than strategic planning, leading to increased costs and wasted effort during periods of fluctuating plastic prices. Accurate data isn’t just a technical requirement; it’s a financial necessity for modern supply chain management.

A Surprising Discovery of 1990s Engineering

A technical audit by UWT’s service team revealed that the silos were equipped with SLS 100 mechanical plumb bob systems; the direct predecessor to the current NivoBob series. These units, manufactured on February 13, 1990, had survived over 35 years of continuous industrial use. The discovery underscores a technical design so robust that it remains functional well beyond typical industry life cycles.

Root Cause Analysis Vindicates Sensor Performance

The technical inspection confirmed the UWT sensors were operating perfectly, using a reliable steel cable and sensing weight to generate precise pulses per decimeter. The ”unreliable” readings were actually caused by a third-party evaluation system misinterpreting the signals. This case proves that UWT’s mechanical rope-operated technology delivers consistent, stable data even under demanding real-world process conditions.

How RF Technology Works RF Technology Decoded by UWT – How Electrical Signals Deliver Reliable Level Detection
How RF Technology Works
RF Technology Decoded by UWT – How Electrical Signals Deliver Reliable Level Detection RF technology (Radio Frequency Capacitance) uses high-frequency measurement for precise level detection. Unlike purely capacitive sensors, it detects not only changes in capacitance but also the specific resistance of the medium. This ensures reliable measurement even under challenging conditions. How does RF technology work? The principle is based on an electrical voltage divider. Together with the medium, the probe forms a measuring system that detects both capacitance and impedance. Impedance describes the total electrical resistance a medium presents to an alternating current. It indicates how strongly a material reacts to electrical signals – and this change is exactly what RF technology uses for reliable detection. When the material comes into contact with the electrode, the capacitance increases abruptly – a clear signal that the level has been reached. The longer the active electrode, the more sensitively the probe responds. This allows the measurement

Accurate Level Measurement with Non-contact Radar
The technology behind UWT’s NivoRadar®. With UWT’s radar technology, levels can be measured precisely and without contact – even under the toughest conditions. Dust, high temperatures or agitated surfaces – challenging measuring conditions are part of everyday operations in many industries. Continuous level measurement using non-contact radar has proven to be one of the most reliable and versatile methods for a wide range of applications. This also includes sensitive areas with particularly high hygiene requirements. With UWT’s radar technology, levels can be measured precisely and without contact – even under the toughest conditions. Precise Level Measurement with Radar – Reliable, Non-contact, Future-Proof Two main technologies radar sensors # Non-contact radar measurement (free-radiating radar): In this method, the radar signal is emitted and reflected without direct contact with the medium. UWT’s NivoRadar® models utilise this principle for liquids and bulk solids in silos, tanks, open containers, or stockpiles. A major advantage is the maintenance-free operation, as there are no mechanical components. #
