Mixing under pressure: Process technology for dietary supplements

amixon® has been developing precision mixers for the production of dietary supplements, vitamin mixtures, and sports nutrition for over 40 years.
This article provides an overview of the key process requirements in dietary supplement manufacturing based on amixon®'s application experience.

Dietary supplements are legally classified as foodstuffs, but in practice they are closer to pharmaceuticals. Complex formulations with vitamins, probiotics, plant extracts, and bioactive substances require reproducible processes, complete documentation, and GMP-compliant equipment. Contract manufacturers face an additional challenge: multiple recipes every day, in the same machines, with maximum demands on allergen management and cleanability.

Four core challenges in process engineering

  • Homogeneity and dosing accuracy: Active ingredients must be distributed identically in each portion. The benchmark is a standard deviation of less than 1% in mixing quality.
  • Protection of sensitive ingredients: Proteins, probiotics, and vitamins are sensitive to heat and shear forces. Suitable mixers operate at low peripheral speeds and with three-dimensional product movement.
  • Addition of liquids to powder systems: The uniform incorporation of lipophilic liquids such as carrier oils or flavors without clumping is one of the most demanding tasks in dietary supplement mixing technology.
  • Residual emptying and product changeover: Dead space-free designs and complete discharge – target value below 0.14 per mille of the batch mass – are prerequisites for cross-contamination-free production and short cleaning times.
amixon® has consistently geared its machine concepts for nutritional supplement mixing to these four requirements – from the mixing chamber geometry and tool kinematics to the discharge system.

Established machine concepts

The HM vertical twin-shaft mixer from amixon® achieves near-perfect mixing quality in 2–5 minutes with low energy input – suitable for large batches with frequent product changes. The AM conical mixer impresses with its cone-shaped geometry, which simplifies cleaning and allows complete discharge – a particular advantage for contract manufacturers with a variable product portfolio. The KoneSlid® mixer KS enables direct connection to filling lines without segregation and with controlled emptying. All designs can be configured in accordance with EHEDG and GMP standards and are available with validatable dry or wet cleaning systems.

Mixing technology is a decisive quality factor in non-food manufacturing – not only for the end product, but for overall production stability. Precision mixers with low shear gradients, dead space-free geometries, and innovative discharge systems are now state of the art. amixon® is one of the established experts in hygienic precision mixing technology in the non-food and food industries and has been developing its systems exclusively at its Paderborn site for over 40 years. Process trials with original recipes in the amixon® technology center ensure scale-up and provide validatable data for GMP documentation.
