How to reduce dust when handling bulk goods

During transport of bulk solids dust is often released. Under health and safety regulations, companies are obliged to take action against this. A high concentration of dust
A high concentration of dust particles quickly leads to you having to take measures to combat dust. Simply handing out face masks is completely inadequate. More needs to be done. The government has stipulated how high the dust concentration may be in a room for each type of substance. If the inspection authorities identify that a room contains too much dust, they are obliged to take action.

No need for expensive installations right from the start

Fortunately, it is not necessary to buy an expensive extraction system straight away. Sometimes it is perfectly possible to adapt the product, business process or machine so that less dust is released.

Contaminated air flow

If all this is not enough, it is time to think about a way to eliminate the dust. If you opt for a system that extracts the dust via a filter, you can expect a polluted airflow. There are also regulations on how high the emissions may be. Particularly strict regulations apply to hazardous substances such as asbestos and quartz.

Efficient dust control with spot filters

The most obvious way to combat dust is to purchase an installation that extracts dust. This method of dust control not only costs a lot of energy, but also requires additional measures in connection with the polluted air flow. All this is not necessary when you use a spot filter.

Dust development within a machine is no problem. Dust only causes nuisance when it is released into the air. A spot filter leaves the dust where it is. One side of the filter is open and acts as a suction opening. This opening is so large that the dust can easily move against the air flow and fall down. The filtered air can be blown out and the dust falls back into the product flow. The spot filter is most efficient when there are as few openings in the machine as possible. Installing a spot filter is an inexpensive way to combat dust. No pipework is required and you do not produce extra waste flows. Once you have noticed the benefits of spot filters, you often won’t want anything else.

Storage and loading of protein-containing meals
Jansen&Heuning designed a logistic system for the processing of blood meal, meat meal and feather meal. Contamination was an important issue. For abattoir waste processor Noblesse, our engineers studied the processing of blood meal, meat meal and feather meal. In this process, contamination, among other things, had to be taken into account. How did they do this? At Noblesse proteins the existing production site had to be improved in terms of storage and loading. The available height is 11,000 mm at the ridge and 9,500 mm at the wall, the width of tents is 45,000 mm. The main challenge for our engineers was that it had to be possible to mix from all of the silos. In addition, we had to ensure two completely separate lines to prevent contamination. Finally, all silos had to be placed on load cells for the correct dosage. Objectives * Storage capacity: feather meal 300 tons; meat meal 600 tons; blood meal 60 tons * Loading with movable conveyor above the cars with loading bellows * loading with a capacity of 60-80 tons/hour The system consists of: * new silo block consisting of five silos of over

Jansen & Heuning modifies transport system in Western Port Area
In the Western Docklands of Amsterdam, ICL Amsterdam is located. This factory annually produces approximately 550,000 tons of high quality potassium and phosphate fertilizers. To improve the production line of ground phosphate, Jansen&Heuning modified the transport system. The work consisted of: * Replacing the old silo/delivery of a new silo * Extension of the existing elevator * Delivery of drop tubes/replacement of old drop tubes * Delivery of a new transport screw * Adjustment of the floors * adapting existing pipework

Unique screw conveyor for sugar processing company
Diameter 800 mm; capacity 150 tonnes/hour; length 13 meter; rotating around its central inlet point. A unique screw conveyor. Jansen&Heuning designed a screw conveyor to transport sugar for sugar beet company Cosun in Hoogkerk. Cosun Beet Company aims to be the greenest and the most innovative sugar beet processor in the world and our engineers got a chance to contribute to this goal. The sugar is transported to the silos with a transportation system. All sugar is stored in four large silos where each silo is divided into 3 compartments: the core, the inner ring and the outer ring. These compartments are filled evenly. Formerly, the silos were filled using a mobile conveyor belt, however, such a system is never 100% clean and is sensitive to errors. Therefore, our engineers designed a rotating screw conveyor. The screw rests on a slewing ring and a wheelset in the middle, that moves the machine around. The screw conveyor has a diameter of 800 mm and is completely made of stainless steel 304. The filling capacity is approximately 150 tonnes/hour. With a length of 13 meter, this is a

Pre-cleaner with cyclone installation for plastic recycling
Jansen&Heuning installed a pre-cleaner with cyclone installation for plastic recycling and compounding company REK Europe B.V. in Oosterhout (NL). REK Europe uses plastic waste which they process into high-quality raw materials for plastics processing companies, by grinding, homogenizing and compounding the plastic waste. After installing the pre-cleaner, the existing frame had to be modified. Therefore, Jansen&Heuning made a separate frame for the cyclone with accompanying filter bags, so that a big bag could be placed under the cyclone and the filter bags could be easily unloaded. The hard particles from the extracted product can be loaded into big bags and the remaining air is filtered with filter bags. The pre-cleaner works well and removes about 99% of the angel hair from the plastic granule: a successful project.

Jansen & Heuning present semi-automatic big bag crusher
A new product in the big bag crusher range of JH. It has proven to be a very successful alternative between the mobile crusher and the fully automatic crusher. The content of big bags can become hard for many reasons. In that case, it is not possible to empty the big bag in a normal way, because the lumps are too big. By crushing the content, the large lumps are reduced to a workable size. Scope of the installation * crusher arms * frame at height * removable shield * radio remote control for the forklift driver * hydraulic unit * the entire frame can be easily moved with a forklift Operation The big bag crusher semi-automatic can be operated as following: a big bag hang with its loops on a forklift and is loaded into the crusher form the top. The crushing usually starts from the top and moves its way down to 4 to 5 places distributed over the height of the bag, the forklift thus lowers the big bag downwards. A crush movement of the big bag crusher lasts approximately 10 seconds. This cycle may be repeated after rotating the big bag 90 degrees , this ensures that all large chunks in the big bags are broken. Hydraulic
