Rules for the Characterisation of Bulk Materials Bulk technology is not rocket science: it’s not that easy. Moreover, rocket scientists agree. A recent paper by NASA: - ‘Granular Materials and the Risks They Pose for Success on the Moon and Mars’, summarizes the uncertainty that surrounds many aspects of bulk handing. The NASA paper states: ‘Working with soil, sand, powders, ores, cement, etc. and using hoppers, are so routine, that it seems straightforward to do it on the moon and mars as we do it on earth. This paper brings to the fore how little these processes are understood and the millennia-long trial-and-error practices that lead to today’s massive over-design, high failure rate, and extensive incremental scaling up of industrial processes because of the inadequate predictive tools for design’. This state of affairs was also confirmed by two well-cited Rand reports that compared the performance of a number of new solids handling installations with others handling liquids and gasses. Pulverization Down to the Nanometer Range
With RETSCH's New Mixer Mill MM 500 With the new Mixer Mill MM 500 RETSCH has developed the first ball mill with a frequency of 35 Hz which produces enough energy for efficient wet grinding of samples down to the nanometer range. Based on performance, operation, application fields and design the MM 500 is a unique combination of a classic mixer mill and a planetary ball mill! Hence, it is perfectly suited for long-term grindings of several hours with high energy input to obtain particles sizes <1 µm, e. g. for mechanical alloying or chemical reactions. Thanks to only moderate warming effects, no cooling breaks are required when using the MM 500. On top of that, operation and handling are more comfortable than with planetary ball mills. The benchtop unit is also suitable for dry, wet and cryogenic grinding of sample volumes up to 2 x 45 ml in one working run. It mixes and pulverizes powders and suspensions in only a few seconds. New optical design The very large measuring range of 0.01 µm up to 2100 µm of the ANALYSETTE 22 NanoTec results from the combination of two lasers with two different measuring cell detector spacings: Large particles are detected using an infrared laser with a large distance to the measuring cell, for small particles a green laser with a small distance to the cell is used, which permits the detection of the forward scattered light up to a scattering angle of 65°. The measurement of smallest particles down into the nano range is performed by the green laser light for backward scattering.
