Elevator inspections: identifying and preventing 6 common problems

The white paper highlights six common problems encountered when inspecting bucket elevators – ranging from worn components and damaged buckets to chain wear and loose fastenings – and provides practical recommendations.
Periodic inspections of bucket elevators should be an essential part of any maintenance program. Often it is
helpful to conduct these with a trusted vendor who can provide insight into solutions that go beyond just part
replacement. The following are examples of common issues found during bucket elevator inspection
programmes conducted by 4B. This paper will provide suggestions on what to look for and explain the
consequences of each issue.

Common issues

  1. Worn / Loose Slide Lagging
  2. Broken Buckets
  3. Excessive Bucket Wear
  4. Loose Sprocket on Head Shaft
  5. Chain Wear
  6. Loose Fasteners

In this article we have shared six common problems identified during 4B bucket elevator inspections. Many other
issues can arise and our team of bucket elevator specialists is qualified to inspect and provide solutions to help bring
your bucket elevator back to its optimum performance. Contact 4B book your bucket elevator inspection.

Manganese Steel Wear Rails for Conveyor Drag Chains
4B Manganese Steel Wear Rails provide a low friction, highly wear-resistant ‘running surface’ for conveyor drag chains. Specifically designed for the use with drop forged, heat-treated chain links, 4B Manganese Steel Wear Rails provide a low friction, highly wear-resistant ‘running surface’ for conveyor drag chains. They extend the life of chain conveyor casing bottom plates (and other areas, depending on machine design, handled material and application), protecting against costly wear and premature casing panel replacement. Benefits of work hardening and low friction The combination of a ductile core and a hardened surface results in a durable solution for heavily loaded conveyor systems. The low-friction running surface reduces energy consumption and minimises stress on the conveyor chain, contributing to extended component life and lower operating costs. * Increased wear resistance through work hardening * Extended service life of conveyor casings * Reduced energy consumption due to low friction * High toughness with good formability * Non-magnetic material properties Applications…

Case Study: Elevator Monitoring System Upgrade
Smarter Elevator Safety – Seamless Integration. -How a Leading Pet Food Manufacturer Modernised Their Hazard Monitoring System with 4B’s IE-Node A prominent pet food manufacturer in Suffolk, UK, recently undertook a significant upgrade of its hazard monitoring systems across 16 bucket elevators. The company sought a modern solution that would not only restore safety compliance but also integrate seamlessly with their existing PLC infrastructure. For this complex task, they turned to 4B Braime, a recognised name in bulk material handling solutions and industrial safety systems. Known for its robust engineering capabilities and turnkey services, 4B was selected to design, supply, and install a solution that would meet the manufacturer’s current and future hazard monitoring needs. Challenge The pet food facility had previously installed a network of hazard sensors to monitor belt misalignment, speed, and component temperature. However, over time, these sensors had either failed or been disconnected, leaving the system ineffective. In some cases, visible wear was evident - such as a belt wearing through…
