Smart Dust Control: Maximizing Safety with Bag Compactors

Industrial dust emissions threaten health, safety, and compliance. Big bag and bag compactors offer a powerful, closed-system solution to eliminate dust during packaging disposal while boosting operational efficiency.
In industrial environments where bulk materials and packaged raw materials are processed, dust emissions remain a continuous challenge. Not only from the perspective of occupational safety and health, but also regarding product loss, environmental impact and compliance with regulations. Big bag and bag compactors provide a practical and effective solution for controlled processing of residual materials and empty packaging while significantly reducing dust dispersion.

The Challenge of Residual Dust in Packaging Disposal

When emptying bags and big bags, residual material is often released and spreads through the area in the form of fine dust. Traditional handling methods, where empty packaging is manually disposed of, increase the risk of dust-related problems. In these situations, compactors offer clear added value. By compressing empty bags and big bags directly after use in a closed system, dust emissions are reduced to a minimum.

Specialized Compression for Bags and Big Bags

Bag compactors are specifically designed for smaller packaging such as paper and plastic bags. Operators can easily feed these into the machine, after which the material is automatically compressed. This not only results in a significant reduction in volume, but also prevents residual product particles from re-entering the air.
Big bag compactors operate according to a similar principle but are built more robustly to reliably process larger and heavier packaging as well as very rigid big bags.

Flexible Feeding and Extraction Integration

Compactors offer various feeding options, tailored to the logistics and available space within the production environment. Big bags can be lowered directly into the compactor from an overhead hoist or by means of a lifting frame. This minimises manual handling and reduces the risk of dust spreading.
An alternative is a version with a front door, allowing the operator to insert the big bag easily. In facilities with multiple floors, feeding through a downward shaft offers an efficient solution. Empty big bags are discharged from above and processed directly in the compactor. This saves both time and transport movements.
An important advantage of these compactor systems is their integration with existing dust extraction systems. Many compactors are equipped with connection points for extraction installations, ensuring that released dust is captured immediately. This contributes to a cleaner working environment and helps companies comply with increasingly strict dust regulations and ATEX guidelines.

Driving Operational Efficiency and Compliance

In addition to safety and environmental benefits, compactors also provide operational efficiency. By drastically reducing the volume of waste streams, fewer transport movements are required and waste processing costs decrease. Furthermore, a tidy workplace improves workflow and reduces the risk of disruptions in the production process.

Choosing the Right System for Your Process

The choice between a big bag or bag compactor depends on the specific application and the type of packaging material. In many cases, a combination of both systems is ideal, especially in production environments where both bulk packaging and smaller bags are used. Tailor-made solutions, aligned with the process line and the degree of dust generation, deliver the best results.

Precision Flow: Poeth’s New Belt Weigher for Bulk Solids
Poeth introduces its Inline Belt Weighing System, designed to provide real-time material flow data in harsh industrial environments. High accuracy and seamless integration ensure process stability where every ton counts. In bulk material handling, insight into material flow is not optional—it is essential. Whether in mining, recycling, cement, or food processing, operators rely on accurate and continuous weighing data to keep processes stable, efficient, and under control. Conveyor belt weighing systems (belt weighers) are a proven solution to measure material flow directly on the conveyor. By providing real-time data without interrupting the process, they form a critical link between production and process control. Engineering Precision for Real-World Accuracy In practice, achieving reliable weighing results on a conveyor is not just about placing a scale under a belt. External influences such as vibrations, belt tension, material build-up, and environmental conditions all impact measurement accuracy. A well-designed belt weighing system combines robust mechanics with high-quality signal processing. At the core of the system, a dedicated weighing controller translates load cell

Precision and Safety in Enzyme Production Dosing
Poeth built a new, high-precision automated dosing system designed for ultra-low dust emissions and seamless ERP integration. To meet the rising global demand for natural ingredients, a leading biotechnology firm has scaled its production of enzyme blends for the flour and bakery sectors. This expansion centers on a new, high-precision automated dosing system designed for ultra-low dust emissions and seamless ERP integration. Overcoming Complex Engineering Challenges The project demanded a delicate balance between extreme precision and rigorous safety standards. Key technical requirements included achieving a dosing accuracy of ±5 grams while maintaining dust emissions below 0.6 mg/m³. Furthermore, the solution had to be retrofitted into a space-constrained facility, requiring a design that facilitated easy cleaning and integrated both bulk flour handling and liquid dosing into existing mixing processes. Advanced Dust Containment and Ergonomics To protect operators from airborne particulates, the system utilizes dust-controlled bag dumping stations featuring laminar airflow. This

Improving Silo Homogeneity with a Z-Conveyor
Improving Silo Homogeneity with a Z-Conveyor
Consistent product quality is essential in the bulk solids and powder handling industry. Variations in composition, segregation during transport, or uneven feeding can negatively impact the homogeneity of the final product. By integrating a Z-Conveyor into your process, the mixing performance of your silo can be significantly improved. The principle is simple yet highly effective: a controlled portion of the silo discharge is recirculated via the Z-Conveyor and reintroduced into the incoming product stream. This creates a first stage of homogenization before the material even enters the silo. As a result, differences in product properties are equalized at an early stage. This continuous recirculation contributes to a more stable process and reduces the risk of segregation—especially important when handling materials with varying particle sizes, densities, or moisture levels. The result is a more consistent, homogeneous end product and improved control over process

Advanced Post-Gassing Solutions for Dairy and Food Big-Bag Sealing
Maximize shelf life and prevent fat oxidation with Poeth Solids Processing’s automated MAP technology. Our turnkey system uses vacuum and nitrogen flushing to ensure superior product stability for sensitive powders. The Science of Shelf-Life Extension In the food industry, Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is increasingly essential for preserving product integrity. This technology is particularly vital in the dairy sector for milk powders containing unsaturated fats, where the primary objective is to arrest the oxidation process. By significantly reducing oxygen exposure, manufacturers can maintain flavor profiles and nutritional value over much longer periods than traditional packaging methods allow. Combating Oxidation with Precision Fat oxidation is a direct result of oxygen exposure; therefore, displacing oxygen is the most effective way to protect sensitive goods. Most modern applications replace ambient air with pure nitrogen or a specialized nitrogen-carbon dioxide blend. This substitution creates a stable internal environment that protects the product from the chemical degradation that typically occurs during storage and transport. Vacuum Technology and Inert Gas

Poeth realizes a new fertilizer plant
Fertira has partnered with Poeth to double its production capacity. By adding two new pressing lines and massive solar power, the expansion ensures high-precision, sustainable fertilizer output. Doubling Capacity with Advanced Pressing Lines In order to maintain production capacity now and in the future, Fertira decided in 2024 to expand the existing factory with two additional pressing lines, thereby doubling capacity. In addition, the silo block for raw material storage had to be significantly enlarged and more bulk storage had to be created for the pellets and crumbs produced. ‘The starting points for the new factory were minimal product damage, minimal drag and high accuracy and homogeneity of the mixtures,’ says Isabel. ‘We also felt it was essential for the new factory to offer maximum flexibility. Only then can we deliver customised solutions to our customers in addition to standard formulas.’ Choosing a Partner with Global Project Expertise In their search for a machine builder who could realise the new factory, Wim Blancke and Isabel Ranschaert ended up at Poeth in Tegelen. ‘Our company operates in a huge niche market. Poeth is one of
