New continuous indoor air quality monitor sensor for dust exposure

ENVEA presents a new continuous indoor air quality monitor sensor for dust exposure. The AirSafe PM is a new measuring instrument to monitor particulate matter exposure such as PM1, PM2.5, PM4.25, PM10 and TSP in indoor ambient air.
The AirSafe PM is a new measuring instrument to monitor particulate matter exposure such as PM1, PM2.5, PM4.25, PM10 and TSP in indoor ambient air.

The AirSafe PM is used to monitor safety levels of air quality for personnel as well as to optimize process and dust control systems. The measured data can also be used by health and safety departments to be proactive in reducing PM concentration and exposure.

Using a high-end optical system, the AirSafe PM monitors the air flowing through the device, counting particles and defining their sizes. The measured data is treated by a combination of processor-based platform and a unique algorithm. Different particle sizes are measured and classified as PM particles or A or E dust fractions.

The AirSafe PM housing is made of ABS and aluminum, ensuring the sensor robustness for industrial applications. The sensor has a digital output that alarms when the set limit value is exceeded. As the sensor is designed to be used in industrial areas, a 4 … 20 mA analogue output is available to be connected to any PLC. In addition to the usual electric signals, the AirSafe PM is also features Modbus communication protocol. Wireless (WLAN) communication, available on the standard version, allows an easy sensor setup using PC or mobile devices.

Continuous dust measurement in malt filling The continuous dust monitoring in malt filling protects employees and the production facility from the dangers of a high dust concentration.
Continuous dust measurement in malt filling
The continuous dust monitoring in malt filling protects employees and the production facility from the dangers of a high dust concentration. APPLICATION In an Estonian brewery, beer is produced from yeast, hops, malt, and water. Delivered by trucks, the malt is stored in silos before further processing. When it is needed in production, the malt is being filled into big bags and transported to its place of use in the brewing process. During the filling, it might occur that big bags are not properly attached, or that they tear. In this case a dust cloud arises and above a certain dust concentration it results in an explosive mixture. Electrical equipment and other ignition sources are in close proximity to this dust cloud, leading to a potentially dangerous situation for employees and the production facility. Therefore, the employees would shut down electrical equipment manually. PROCESS DATA * Customer: Brewery (Estonia) * Product: Malt * Installation: Big bag filling, vicinity of the silos * Continuous dust measurement of the silos‘ ambient air SOLUTION By installing the AirSafe 2 in the hazardous

Early recognition of dangerous dust concentration
Dust-laden exhaust air is produced during production at a confectionery manufacturer. A dangerous dust concentration shall be prevented by an early warning. APPLICATION A confectionery manufacuturer refines dairy products. The dust-laden exhaust air produced during the manufacturing process is cleaned in the extraction system by industrial filter systems. When the limit value is reached, a dangerous dust atmosphere is to be prevented by early warning. A calibratable dust monitor shall continuously monitor the clean gas side according to the permitted dust concentration of max. 20 mg/m³. PROCESS DATA * Customer: Confectionery manufacturer (Germany) * Product: Waffle dust * Permitted limit value: 20 mg/m³ * Installation: Clean gas side of the exhaust duct of a dryer * Function: Continuous measurement of the dust content in the exhaust air SOLUTION In the application described, the ATEX type approved ProSens was used to measure the dust content. The ProSens can be calibrated and monitors clean gas sides downstream of filters continuously and reliably for permitted or customer-specified dust concentrations.

PVC dust monitoring for early warning of hazardous dust concentrations
With AirSafe 2 sensors ENVEA has realised continuous dust monitoring to give early warning of potentially hazardous dust concentrations in packaging areas. At a PVC powder manufacturing site, robots are used in the packaging plant to fill 25 kg bags. The company’s ATEX guidelines state that there is an ATEX Zone 22 in the area of 5 metres around the plant. The ignitable mixture of PVC powder is 50 g/m3, which can happen if a bag does not withstand the pressure and breaks when being filled by a robot. However, by the time the system recognises this and internally switches off the filling, several kilos of material have often escaped into the ambient air, resulting in a potentially explosive atmosphere [> 50 g/m3]. Process data * Customer: Manufacturer of PVC powder * Material: PVC powder * Installation: In the packaging plant * Function: Dust monitoring to give early warning of potentially hazardous dust concentrations Solution In the application described, two AirSafe 2 sensors were used for continuous monitoring of the ambient air. In this case, a unit suitable for use in ATEX Zone 22 was used. The two

Avoidance of hazardous dust concentrations through monitoring
Reliable and continous measurement of the dust concentration. Case study on dust measurement in exhaust air, so system can be shut down before a hazardous dust concentration is reached. A well-known food manufacturer in Germany measures the dust value in mg/m3 in its exhaust air upstream of the fan in order to switch it off before a hazardous dust concentration is reached. The ignitable mixture of its dust is 30 g/m3. By calibrating to mg/m3, the desired switching point to turn off the system can be stored exactly. This way, the customer can be sure that the system is shut down before a hazardous dust concentration is reached. Process data: * Customer: Food manufacturer (Germany) * Material: Sugar dust * Installation: Clean gas side in front of the blower / Safety shutdown to protect the fan * Function: Reliable measurement of the dust content Solution: The ProSens sensor provided the solution to the application described which is used to continuously measure the concentration of the clean gas side after filters. The ProSens uses ElectroDynamic technology and through its robust and durable construction, provides a measurement solution to

Multi-Compartment Baghouse Performance Monitoring Reduced operating costs
Multi-Compartment Baghouse Performance Monitoring
Reduced operating costs Application Waste to Energy Plants operate under strict particulate emission control limits, which typically requires the installation of multi-compartment baghouses. Providing a high degree of filtration efficiency, these filters require regular maintenance for optimum performance. Due to complexities of large multi-compartment filters, finding potential leaks can be a complicated and time-consuming task. The current (European) Emission Limit Value (ELV) is relatively low (10 mg/m3), therefore, the consequences of filter leaks can rapidly result in breaches of the emission limit. If solely reliant on the main stack emission monitor for indication of emission limit excursions, the filter failure event will already be underway. To ensure compliance is retained, the ability to locate which compartment contains the leak is a highly valuable process operation tool.
