Rapid Particle Size Reduction for X-Ray Diffraction RETSCH have enhanced their comprehensive range of mills and grinders with the XRD-Mill McCrone which was specifically developed for sample preparation to X-Ray diffraction analysis. Typical areas of application include geology, chemistry, mineralogy and materials science. What makes this mill so effective is the unique grinding action: the grinding jar contains 48 cylinders which pulverize the sample very gently by friction. As a result the crystal lattice structure of the sample is largely preserved which is an important precondition for obtaining meaningful X-ray diffractograms. Further advantages are short grinding times, virtually no sample loss and exceptionally narrow particle size distributions. The grinding vessel consists of a 125 ml polypropylene jar fitted with a screw-capped polyethylene closure. The jar is packed with an ordered array of forty-eight identical cylindrical grinding elements which are available in agate, zirconium oxide or sintered corundum.

Quantitative analysis of metal alloys In the last quarter of 2015 Bruker introduces a new instrument on the market. Handheld laser induced breakdown spectrometry (HH-LIBS) is revolutionary method for easy quantitative analysis of metal alloys. The method is very suitable for alloys containing elements with a relatively low atoom number like Be, Li, Mg, Al and Si. Because this technique does not use an X-ray source no special license is necessary. Applications where the unit can be used are PMI (positive material identification) and Scrap (schroot). Because of the speed of the measurements and the simplicity the unit can be operated by everybody.

During the symposium, speakers from companies, knowledge institutes and academia will present latest developments & innovations in the area of industrial drying, share challenges encountered in practice and strategies to optimise drying operations. This years’ theme is ‘Numbers tell the tale’ or ‘Meten is Weten’ in Dutch. We invited three speakers who will introduce and review innovative measurement techniques to monitor product moisture and air moisture contents. RETSCH’s new rotor mills The new generation of RETSCH rotor mills SR 300 and SK 300 has been greatly improved with regard to performance, handling and flexibility. The speed of the rotor beater mill SR 300 has been substantially increased and can be set between 3,000 and 10,000 rpm, thus allowing for optimum adaptation to application requirements. Further new features are the removable cassette and push-fit rotor which can be easily taken out for cleaning without using tools, just like the removable hopper.
