A New Generation of High-Performance Powder Materials

Advanced Pulse Powder Technology for tapping into new applications

With the launch of APPtec, its new technology for generating high-performance powders, Glatt has taken another step in expanding the fields in which it provides technology expertise. The outstanding potential for powder synthesis that this move opens up will make it possible to configure particles with entirely new combinations of properties that were previously inaccessible. This targeted method of designing new powder types with precisely tailored, application-specific properties is establishing new horizons for customized products, enabling them to be applied in a whole range of areas and offering tremendous economic potential for use in a completely new set of applications.
The new Advanced Pulse Powder Technology APPtec is a one-of-a-kind, continuous thermal process for generating powders. It enables new powder types to be designed with particular aims in mind and precisely tailored properties, such as an application-specific particle structure, composition, or surface texture – and it even opens up the possibility of giving particles combinations of properties that were previously inaccessible.
It is already known that the technology is especially well suited to manufacturing catalytic materials, where it achieves significantly higher rates of activity compared to other types of technology, resulting in clear competitive advantages.
However, APPtec is also an excellent choice for creating the powder materials used to manufacture ceramics. In many cases, high-performance ceramics are associated purely with bioceramics (for joint endoprostheses, dental applications). Ceramic high-performance materials are becoming more and more widespread nowadays, however, and are gaining a foothold in almost every cutting-edge market – as cathode materials for fuel cells, for instance, or as optoceramics for lenses or detectors. In these applications too, the powder quality holds the key to the material’s performance, with the most important features being fine particles, pinpoint doping, and exceptional homogeneity. This is exactly where APPtec’s strengths lie.
Pigments represent an entirely different market for this technology. TiO2 and ZnO, for instance, are mass-produced pigments, but the new Glatt technology indicates clear benefits for specialty types – one example being effect pigments. Some applications also require extremely fine pigments because of the properties these provide, such as better color intensity and lower concentration levels. This new technology makes it possible to generate pigments on a nanometer scale if required.
Thanks to its very specific thermodynamic conditions, the APPtec synthesis is able to configure a new generation of innovative high-performance materials. The chemical composition of the generated particles can be configured with almost complete freedom, and the technology can be used to produce doped and complex stoichiometric materials as well as coated particles, exactly according to the user’s specific requirements.

Company information

Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH
Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH
Glatt is specialized in intelligent particle design for the generation and functionalization of powders and granulates with defined, adjustable properties. The focus is on particles and powders for pigments, catalytic, ceramic or battery materials as well as for granules and pellets as additives for e.g. industrial salts, detergents and cleaning agents, fertilizers, pesticides, food, feed, dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals. Encapsulation of flavors, enzymes, vitamins, microorganisms, probiotics or fatty acids (PUFA) is just as possible as encapsulation of essential oils and other active, sensitive substances to be protected. With Glatt APPtec®, a unique technology for spray calcination, it is possible to generate, coat and then calcine particles in a pulsing hot gas stream in a single process step. As a pioneer in fluid bed and spouted bed technologies, Glatt masters these important processes for the formulation and optimization of particle properties through defined spray agglomeration, spray granulation, spray coating or (micro)encapsulation as well as through combinations of these processes. Also in the high temperature range. Glatt supports the product idea from the early phase of product formulation through process development to scale-up to production scale. Under the leadership of the Glatt Process & Plant Engineering teams, customized production plants for nutrition, fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biotech applications are successfully planned and commissioned. Worldwide. Whether based on powder synthesis, fluid bed or spouted bed technology, Glatt also offers certified contract manufacturing for customers without their own production capacities.
