The reasons for that are the increased reactivity and the lower thermal conductivity due to the large specific surface area. For example a fire ball with more than 15 m in diameter arises, if only 1.5 kg of pulverised lignite is detonated by a spark. But what might dust mean? Dust consists of smallest, finely divided solid particles of any shape, structure and density with a particle size of less than 0.5 mm that sediment due to the self-weight but although remain airborne as a dust/air mix for a time.
