Which bulk material conveyor for which situation?
Chain and screw conveyors versus belt conveyors

There are several alternatives for conveying bulk materials. The most important of these are screw conveyors, belt conveyors and chain conveyors. Conveyors for bulk material should always be tailored to the situation: the movement path and the characteristics of the specific bulk material. Which type of conveyor is best for each situation?

At Sinfimasa, we always say that the most important factor determining the choice of conveyor type is the product to be transported. Before the engineer defines the system, the properties of the product and conditions must be characterised. To mention are: the bulk density, grain size, abrasiveness, corrosivity, the temperature at which it will be transported, the power required, the degree of clumping, hygroscopicity, etc... Depending on the product and the configuration of the process or plant, one device will be better than another, although in many cases several types can be used.

Chain and screw conveyors versus belt conveyors

The main advantage of chain and screw conveyors is that they can be fully enclosed, in a hermetically sealable casing or tube. This prevents exposure of the bulk material to the open environment, and avoids contamination of the surroundings. Moving parts are also shielded, reducing the risk of accidents.
Another advantage of chain and screw conveyors over belt conveyors is that they can operate at higher temperatures, as both the chains and the flights are made of steel. With a belt conveyor, the belt is usually made of rubber.
With chain conveyors and screw conveyors, a higher head (60º, sometimes even vertical) can be achieved than with belts. And using a chain conveyor, horizontal and near-vertical transport can be combined.
Furthermore screw conveyors and chain conveyors can be fitted quite easily with multiple discharge openings.

Sinfimasa manufactures chain and screw conveyors specifically for each customer and project. Depending on the needs of the plant and the product to be transported, we study the feasibility of the project thanks to the experience of more than 40 years of designing and manufacturing this equipment.

Sinfimasa bucket elevators and screw conveyors for lead oxide Confined horizontal and vertical transport of lead oxide with a temperature of 110°C, a toxic and polluting material.
Sinfimasa bucket elevators and screw conveyors for lead oxide
Confined horizontal and vertical transport of lead oxide with a temperature of 110°C, a toxic and polluting material. Lead oxide or lead dioxide is an odorless brown powder or crystal. It is used in the electrodes of lead-acid accumulator batteries and in the paint, rubber and ceramics industries. In this success story, our client is a multinational lead-acid battery manufacturer that needed to transport and elevate lead oxide with an average temperature of 110°C for a new manufacturing line. Lead oxide is characterized by a high density and in this case, it is transported with a fine granulometry in powder form. In addition to its toxicity and polluting capacity, it requires that the machinery that transports it has an adequate sealing to avoid material leaks and an adequate dimensioning to ensure its correct operation in case of unexpected stoppages. Lead oxide bucket elevators To meet the requirements of the plant’s engineers, Sinfimasa designed and manufactured a belt bucket elevator taking into account the abrasion, temperature and tension requirements, so a top brand

Chain conveyors for transport and elevation of Solid Recovered Fuel
Sinfimasa designed three chain conveyors for the transport of SRF. Sectorization of two fire zones was important, so one of the conveyors was equipped with firewall slide gates. Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is a fuel prepared from non-hazardous waste, and used for energy recovery in incineration and co-incineration plants. It consists of small fractions of waste with a high calorific value. This makes it also suitable for use in cement kiln installations. Our client is a non-hazardous waste valorisation plant, and needed to build a conveying line to deliver different types of SRF into storage boxes after shredding, separation and classification process. The required output was 150 m3/h. Transport in 3 steps To solve this need, Sinfimasa designed three chain conveyors; the first one would transport the SRF at a horizontal distance of about 10m and would elevate it to a height of 8m. The second conveyor is positioned horizontally over a distance of 4,7 m. An important function of this conveyor is to ensure the sectorization of two fire zones, so it was equipped with firewall slide gates. A third conveyor was designed and manufactured

Sinfimasa supplies several screws for sugar in ATEX design
Sinfimasa supplies several screws for sugar in ATEX design
A major manufacturer of soft drinks, both sweetened and light and zero, required several screw conveyors for conveying sugar. The challenge in this case was that the screws would be located in an ATEX 22 (3D) zone and had to have a food-grade finish according to FDA regulations. The project also included several extraction screws for unloading silos and big-bags, and conveyor screws for transport with throughputs ranging from 9 to 36 tons per hour. Some of these screw conveyors would be mounted under inclinations of up to 35º. The design of the screws therefore had to take into account the function of each conveyor. The pitch, power and speed of the drives were calculated specifically for each screw. Since the sugar was very fine, a mechanical air sealing system was chosen to close and seal the conveyors. In addition, hygienic production criteria were considered in the design to reduce or eliminate the risk of the screw conveyor being a source of contamination

Auger screws and bucket elevators in an fluff waste recycling line
Sinfimasa designed a double auger with screw conveyors and a bucket elevator for a difficult material, consisting of very different fractions. Heterogenous material On this occasion, our client is a waste treatment plant that needed to transport fine particles from a shredding machine. The bulk material to be transported was very heterogenous: it consisted of 60% rubber and plastics, 15% glass, soil and minerals, 10% textiles and wood, 10% paints and oxides, and 5% metals. The material flow was 7 tonnes per hour, with a grain size of 0 to 20 mm, a density of 600 kg/m3, and a moisture content of 10 to 15%. Closed screw conveyors A conveyor belt was difficult to use, as spillage of material would cause an environmental problem. The solution was to design a system of closed screw conveyors that prevent the spillage of product. In addition, it also avoids manpower in the route and possible accidents with rollers and drums of a conveyor belt. Robust and maintenance friendly To ensure efficient extraction from the hopper that stores the material to be processed and to prevent product accumulation, Sinfimasa

Hygienic bucket elevator for salt for hygienic cleaning SINFIMASA has manufactured two 316L stainless steel bucket elevators for a large mining company according to the principles of hygienic design.
Hygienic bucket elevator for salt for hygienic cleaning
SINFIMASA has manufactured two 316L stainless steel bucket elevators for a large mining company according to the principles of hygienic design. Common salt (NaCl) is considered a neutral powder and is used for dry cleaning of hygienically designed equipment and installations. The handling and treatment of this salt requires equipment that is equally hygienically designed to prevent contamination during the cleaning process. In addition, the characteristics of the product - highly corrosive and hygroscopic - must be taken into account. When designing an elevator for handling this salt, a number of specifications must be taken into account to reduce or eliminate the risk of the conveyor being a direct or indirect source of contamination. This is achieved by ensuring that the elevator can be easily cleaned, inspected and maintained, and by preventing the accumulation of dirt in the elevator. All materials that come into contact with the salt must be stable and inert. Since it concerns a belt elevator, the choice of belt must comply with FDA regulations, as must the rubber of the drive pulley, pulley blocks,
