Biomass-Silo provide Gerolding with Energy

Miscanthus, wood chips, dust and powder

Geroldinger sees the pelletization of biomass fuels as a waste of energy, therefore first flow experiments were carried out with the the biomass "miscanthus". The technological challenge of this product is the low bulk density of only 140kg/m³. Based on the laboratory results the silo and heating system of our plant was produced. The annual heat requirement of 1500 hours at full load by 150kW involves the heating of all operational buildings (warehouse and office areas) and the peak loads caused by the paint shop.

The heating system consists of a standard industrial combustion boiler, a self-made 25,000 liters of hot water storage for providing the energy for the peak heat load, a housed intake pit (equipped with a dedusting unit) and four screw-conveyors (500mm diameter) to ensure a rapid take over of materials from suppliers. The resulting combustion is almost pure ash from the boiler transported pneumatically into a silo.

The 650m ³ concrete silo, the bin with the corresponding geometry and the discharge-system "OSZILLOMAT" are the core elements of a functioning metered discharge of complex fuel such as miscanthus. One of the main unique selling points is the existence of the mass flow. This means that each individual piece goods are in motion. The Firstin-Firstout principle allows a drying effect. The material gets removed layer by layer along the ground and thus sets a high residence time of the "fresh" material. Of particular interest is the effect in a mixed operation of different renewable raw materials such as wood chips, sawdust, or even wood dusts with different moisture content. The feed unit with the OSZILLOMAT SYSTEM, together with the gravimetric weighing system bring an efficient combustion. Due to the exact dosage a long life of the burner and a optimal heater-output is achieved.

The outside technical components are freely accessible so maintenance and repair work will be carried out easily in a full silo.
