Modernizing a legacy lime slaking system at Waste-to-Energy Plant
Modernizing a legacy lime slaking system at the Leverkusen Waste-to-Energy Plant
Processing 210,000 tons of waste per year for ~720,000 people, the facility relies on an advanced flue gas treatment system where lime slurry neutralizes acid gases.
The challenge:
A Wallace & Tiernan® paste slaking system installed in 1995 had become obsolete, with no spare parts available.
Sodimate Deutschland GmbH designed a targeted retrofit, preserving existing tanks and pumps while upgrading key components:
➡️ silo discharge and dosing systems
➡️ lime slaking units
➡️ water dosing systems
➡️ Brother washers
During installation, a mobile plant ensured continuous lime slurry supply, avoiding downtime.
The result:
✔ smooth operation of both lines
✔ stable lime slurry production (~2,700 L/h)
✔ improved reliability and long-term maintainability
This project proves that aging installations can be modernized efficiently and sustainably.
Operating an older lime slaking system?
A retrofit could extend its lifetime and improve performance.
