Spill and dust control at glass factory Vidrala Santos Barosa

To avoid wasting raw materials in glass production, TBK Group carried out a technical inventory and steps were taken to avoid spillage and dust at the conveyor belts.
The Portuguese glass factory Vidrala Santos Barosa enlisted the help of TBK Group to avoid wasting raw materials in glass production. During a visit to the factory last April, a technical inventory was carried out and the first steps were taken to avoid spillage and dust at the conveyor belts.

The over 130 year old glass factory was taken over in 2017 by the Spanish concern Vidrala. This group owns several glass factories in Spain, Portugal and Italy, among other countries. In the factory, where tradition and modernisation merge, around 425 million glass bottles for beer and wine are produced each year.

Prevention of waste

Glass is a product that consists of various, precisely combined raw materials, which are processed at very high temperatures. ”The conveyor belts are the heart of the raw material supply for glass production in the factory,” explains Micha Bermentloo, export manager at TBK Group. After the raw materials are deposited on the conveyors, a loss of ten per cent is measured due to dusting. To find a solution to this wastage, Bermentloo together with technical project manager at TBK Group Rob Bakker and Eduard Sánchez of IC Iberconveyor, TBK’s dealer for Spain and Portugal, visited the glass factory to carry out a full technical inventory. ”We wanted to get a good picture of the current situation of the conveyors in order to recommend possible improvements with regard to dust control, dust extraction and air filtration and the installation of belt scraper systems.”

Added value

Based on the information gathered and obtained, technical drawings were provided, including a complete plan of action with improvements. ”For us as supplier, this is a very nice project to do. We are actively involved and can give direction to the technical drawings and solutions,” says Bermentloo. ”The cooperation with Santos Barosa Vidros is going very well. We have been welcomed, guided well and given the right information. The people at the glass factory have responded enthusiastically to the proposed improvement plans and absolutely see the added value of them.”

No more wear and tear at coal and iron ore conveyor belts
Spillage of conveyor belts caused wear and tear, contamination, extra maintenance and extra time. TBK Spillage Control solves this by installing an impact bed and bars, sealing blocks and skirt liners. Material spillage has long been a thorn in the side of a large company processing coal and iron ore. It caused wear and tear, pollution and a maintenance-intensive way of working at the dumping point. TBK Spillage Control brought the matter back into line by implementing an ImpTek impact bed, impact bars, Spill-Ex sealing blocks and ProTek ceramic skirt liners. Efficiency and optimisation The more than 30-metre-long conveyor is located under dumping points of three other conveyor belts. Because the bulk material has to make a right-angled turn at this point, dropping several metres, this point is subject to extra stress. The result? Belt wear, spillage and dust contamination. TBK Spillage Control was able to eliminate the contamination by installing a custom-made dumping point in combination with an ImpTek impact bed and corresponding impact bars. In addition, TBK implemented sustainable Spill-Ex sealing blocks provide a more efficient, less labour-intensive and

CenTrax belt trackers with unique swivel bearing
The perfectly sealed swivel bearing, wear-resistant diamond profiled rollers and a sophisticated design make that the CenTrax belt alignment system remains operational under all conditions. CenTrax Operating principle See the video for a graphic display of mounting options and working principle. As soon as the conveyor belt starts to mistrack, the two tapered rollers on the sides will show a difference in the rotation speed. When this happens, the CenTrax belt tracker immediately engage and guides the conveyor belt back to its correct position. Unique swivel bearing The heart of any tracking system is the pivot. A common problem is that dirt, dust and moisture is blocking the pivot, which makes the belt tracker stops working. With our expertise, based on 60 years of experience, we have developed a pivot point – which we call a swivel bearing – that is insensitive to the influences of dirt, dust and moisture. Low in maintenance The swivel bearing is oil bath lubricated and completely maintenance free. Due to wear-resistant diamond profiled rollers and a sophisticated design that prevents build-up of dirt, CenTrax remains operational under

Conveyor belt ArcelorMittal on the right track with Centrax
Trouble-free belt conveying is crucial for ArcelorMittal in Belgian Gent. CenTrax ensures that the conveyor belt remains aligned along its entire length. At its location in Ghent, ArcelorMittal Belgium was experiencing severe misalignment problems with their 225 conveyor belts, which have a total length of 58 kilometres. The damage caused to the conveyor, its structure and unplanned downtime resulted in high costs, loss of production and consequential losses. Tim Vertriest, reliability engineer at ArcelorMittal Ghent, decided to find a solution: “The CenTrax tracking system came out best in our comparison search, and has proved to be a lasting solution.“ 10 million tonnes of raw materials A trouble-free conveyor belt is crucial for a company such as ArcelorMittal. The Raw Materials, Port, Transport and Recycling divisions of the world’s largest steel producer processes almost 10 million tonnes of raw materials annually. This particular logistics branch deals with unloading seagoing vessels and the careful separation and storage of delivered raw materials to so-called raw material storage areas. Harbour cranes
