TBK Spillage Control liberates a storage and transhipment company from spillage

No more wear and tear at coal and iron ore conveyor belts

Spillage of conveyor belts caused wear and tear, contamination, extra maintenance and extra time. TBK Spillage Control solves this by installing an impact bed and bars, sealing blocks and skirt liners.
Material spillage has long been a thorn in the side of a large company processing coal and iron ore. It caused wear and tear, pollution and a maintenance-intensive way of working at the dumping point. TBK Spillage Control brought the matter back into line by implementing an ImpTek impact bed, impact bars, Spill-Ex sealing blocks and ProTek ceramic skirt liners.

Efficiency and optimisation

The more than 30-metre-long conveyor is located under dumping points of three other conveyor belts. Because the bulk material has to make a right-angled turn at this point, dropping several metres, this point is subject to extra stress. The result? Belt wear, spillage and dust contamination. TBK Spillage Control was able to eliminate the contamination by installing a custom-made dumping point in combination with an ImpTek impact bed and corresponding impact bars. In addition, TBK implemented sustainable Spill-Ex sealing blocks provide a more efficient, less labour-intensive and optimised loading point with internally mounted ProTek ceramic skirt liners. This skirt liner has a dual function: as a primary seal to protect the Spill-Ex and as a wear plate to protect the edges of the loading point.

Individual, fast and easy

The impact bed cushions the impact of the material being dumped onto the conveyor belt. In addition to cushioning the falling energy, impact bars prevent the belt from collapsing due to the heavy weight, so that no gap can form between the belt and the seal and no material can escape,” explains Alex Budding, account manager at TBK Spillage Control.
Metre-long rubber sealing strips have been installed to seal off dumping points and prevent spillage. The storage and handling company used a similar solution before, but still had to contend with pollution due to the rapid and irregular wear of the rubber. The company therefore had to replace a complete rubber strip on a regular basis, even if the wear only affected a small part of the sealing strip.
According to Budding, this problem is easily solved by the innovative, modular Spill-Ex sealing blocks: ”They are separate blocks that you can adjust and replace independently of each other, so that you don’t needlessly throw away parts that have not yet worn out. They are also dust- and material-tight, easy to adjust and help reduce operating and maintenance costs. The rubber is extremely abrasion-resistant, but does not make any grooves in the belt. The elastic rubber provides a soft, yet firm contact with the belt.”

TBK Spillage Control supplies everything from stock, a deliberate choice according to the account manager in order to avoid customer frustration and the unnecessary shutdown of the production process.

Less pollution

The modern storage and handling company handles tens of millions of tonnes of bulk goods annually, of which around 5 million tonnes are transported via the dumping point tackled by TBK Spillage Control. Yet according to the spokesperson, on paper the company hardly notices the reduced loss of material which, thanks to TBK Spillage Control, has become part of the production volume again: ”It may sound a little strange, but we are really talking about thousands of tons of material. It is a continuous flow of material. If we lose a few hundred kilos due to pollution, we don’t even miss it. The advantage for us is more in the handling: we don’t have to clean up as much rubbish now.

’The investment pays for itself’

According to the spokesperson, the company is very pleased with the customised solution. Excessive wear and tear, contamination and intensive maintenance are now a thing of the past, and since implementation there have been no costs for further optimisation. ”It has now held up well for over 2.5 years. Maybe we adjust the Spill-Ex sealing blocks once every few months, but it’s going really well. The value of this investment pays for itself through easier and less maintenance.” Management is therefore not outsourced, which again has a positive cost impact.

The company is very satisfied with the end result and the cooperation: ”TBK Spillage Control offers space to think along with you and to spar with you. They know their business, you can tell that from everything. The steel construction is custom-made, but everything was installed at our premises in a short space of time.” The spokesperson does not have to think for long about what the company is most impressed with: ”The possibility of extending a dumping point over a longer section of the conveyor belt - that offers opportunities for the future.
