Explosion protection through the use of explosion vents is well accepted and used throughout todays industry. The pressure and flames resulting from an explosion can be effectively discharged, resulting in a predictable control of explosion effects. The designer/user is facing the secondary consequences of the explosion: post-explosion fire damages to the equipment being protected. The use/selection of traditional fire protection systems is often limited due to the inherent presence of large pressure relief openings in the equipment, allowing fesh air to be fed into the fire and reducing the available concentration of fire extinguishing media.
