Good luck! - Closure of the last colliery in Germany

On Friday, 21 December 2018, the last German colliery was closed in Bottrop.

On Friday, 21 December 2018, the last German colliery wa closed in Bottrop. We wish the miners ”Good Luck!” for the future.

All of Germany looked to Bottrop at the end of 2018. After a long tradition the last colliery in Prosper Haniel in Germany has been closed on Friday, 21 December 2018. Thus a long tradition-rich occupation and era came to an end. On the occasion of the closure, an ecumenical service has been held in the Essen Dome, to which the patron saint, the holy Barbara statue, has been brought from a depth of 1,200 metres and to thank the miners for their many years of work. The patron saint was often depicted on miner’s lamps. Such a petroleum lamp, like the one here from RHEWUM, was a duty for the miners to find their way outside in case of a electrical breakdown.
