novel spray calcination process using APPtec powder synthesis

Specialty chemicals, pigments and pilot plants

Powtech 2017: hot topics at Glatt Ingenieurtechnik’s booth

Granulation, coating processes and innovative APPtec-based high-performance materials were in the spotlight - The record attendee numbers at the 20th edition of Powtech (Nuremberg, Germany) delivered a rush of visitors to plant manufacturer Glatt Ingenieurtechnik’s stand. Focusing on particle design, the company showcased its fluidized and spouted bed granulation and coating expertise, as well as a novel spray calcination process using APPtec powder synthesis.

On-stand discussions at Glatt Ingenieurtechnik’s booth covered functional coatings for food ingredients and animal feed components, granulates for construction and chemical products, and powders with special properties. Several industry representatives confirmed one-week microencapsulation, spray granulation and spray coating trials at the Thuringian Technology Center to do feasibility studies with Glatt’s process specialists.
Successful laboratory and pilot trials such as these are often the first step towards planning a new system or complete production site, which Glatt implements worldwide for its customers. This also includes pharmaceutical and biotech production facilities, about which numerous conversations took place.
Several visitors came from the coatings and paints industry to learn about APPtec, Glatt’s novel hot gas reactor-based spray calcination process for powder synthesis. A key area of interest was pigment applications, along with catalytic materials and ceramic materials. Attendees were keen to discover more about the differences between the functionalization and refinement of particle systems using fluidized and spouted bed technologies compared with hot gas synthesis with APPtec, whereby the raw materials provided by customers are used to generate new, high-performance ingredients using a stream of hot, pulsing gas.

Company information

Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH
Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH
Glatt is specialized in intelligent particle design for the generation and functionalization of powders and granulates with defined, adjustable properties. The focus is on particles and powders for pigments, catalytic, ceramic or battery materials as well as for granules and pellets as additives for e.g. industrial salts, detergents and cleaning agents, fertilizers, pesticides, food, feed, dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals. Encapsulation of flavors, enzymes, vitamins, microorganisms, probiotics or fatty acids (PUFA) is just as possible as encapsulation of essential oils and other active, sensitive substances to be protected. With Glatt APPtec®, a unique technology for spray calcination, it is possible to generate, coat and then calcine particles in a pulsing hot gas stream in a single process step. As a pioneer in fluid bed and spouted bed technologies, Glatt masters these important processes for the formulation and optimization of particle properties through defined spray agglomeration, spray granulation, spray coating or (micro)encapsulation as well as through combinations of these processes. Also in the high temperature range. Glatt supports the product idea from the early phase of product formulation through process development to scale-up to production scale. Under the leadership of the Glatt Process & Plant Engineering teams, customized production plants for nutrition, fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biotech applications are successfully planned and commissioned. Worldwide. Whether based on powder synthesis, fluid bed or spouted bed technology, Glatt also offers certified contract manufacturing for customers without their own production capacities.

APPtec revolutionizes particle design for future materials
New microsite goes live Glatt has launched a new internet platform that explains how its latest technology offers virtually limitless possibilities for developing tailor-made high-performance powders. On the new microsite, Glatt presents its revolutionary thermal process for powder synthesis, APPtec. The abbreviation APPtec stands for Advanced Pulse Powder technology by Glatt, which represents a groundbreaking development in spray calcination. In the hot gas reactor, primary particles can be equipped with almost unlimited adjustable chemical and mineralogical compositions and with previously unattainable properties. In a single process step, size, particle structure and surface can be individually defined and implemented. For instance, functional core-shell particles can be given application-specific layer thickness, porosity and activity.
