A rod source/point detector arrangement offers numerous advantages that cannot be achieved with a point source/rod detector arrangement. Due to less frequent production downtimes, simpler and thus more economical spare parts inventory, increased long-term and temperature stability and consistent process quality, the higher acquisition costs are mitigated within a short period of time. Introduction When planning a radiometric measurement, the technical design is fundamental. It is created and developed based on process conditions, process geometry, customer input as well as local background radiation, site conditions, and mounting space limitations. For the design of radiometric level or bulk flow measurements, a choice must be made between two arrangements: a point source with a rod detector, or a rod source and a point detector, see fig 1. Due to the slightly lower purchase price, the arrangement with a point source and rod detector is frequently selected.

The determination of moisture in dry fibrous material is important to keep the boiler efficiency constant. The determination of moisture in dry fibrous material is important to keep the boiler efficiency constant. Especially in summer, when the wood chip stockpiles are moistened, the water concentration can vary drastically. The Berthold LB 568 analyser provides an online and real-time moisture measurement of digester-fed wood chips. The LB 568 generates multiple microwaves in a wide frequency range, emitted by an antenna below the conveyor. The microwaves penetrate the wood chips and are received by a second antenna above the belt. When penetrating the wood chips, the microwave signal‘s characteristics change in terms of attenuation and phase shift. These changes directly correlate to the wood chip moisture. Variations in layer thickness and bulk density are compensated with the use of a radiometric bulk density compensation system component. Continuous moisture measurement of gypsum from quarries allows product distribution in the storage silo to be optimized according to moisture content. Microwave technology The Micro-Polar moisture meter provides online measurement of the moisture content of gypsum transported by a conveyor belt to the intermediary storage before the kiln. Using microwave technology, a non-contacting measurement is made through the entire product height. This allows a representative online measurement even if the product on the belt comes from a mixture of different storage areas with different humidity levels. Online measurement for quality improvement Microwave measurement is non-contacting; no sensor comes into contact with the product to be measured, which limits maintenance and avoids special cleaning. The measurement is not influenced by the colour or inhomogeneity of the measured product. Furthermore, the measurement is carried out on the entire product profile while traditional measurements only measure the surface of the material profile.
