Kreyenborg at K trade fair - product preview

Kreyenborg presents infrared technology with new control system, storage and feeding systems, recycling solutions, and retrofit solutions for energy-saving
Plastics processors and recyclers place the highest demands on the quality of their plastics. At the same time, they’re always on the lookout for new technology to speed up their processes or to save energy. With Kreyenborg’s infrared technology, there is a cost-saving alternative to hot air-, vacuum- or other drying methods. Whether virgin PET material or recyclates, flakes or compounds, various plastics are heated quickly, gently, and efficiently in Kreyenborg’s infrared rotary drum (IRD). Drying and crystallization are likewise achieved in one step.

Plastics expertise across the board

Kreyenborg, the plastics specialist from Germany, will be demonstrating both a continuous system and a batch version of the infrared rotary drum (IRD) at the K trade fair. To demonstrate the IRD, a large monitor that provides a view into the interior, showing how the material in the rotating drum behaves under infrared light. With mixers, special silos and extruder feeding systems, the plant manufacturer will be demonstrating its broad and decades-long expertise in the handling of bulk materials. Easily and poorly free-flowing or sensitive products have specific characteristics: they stick to each other, contain excess moisture, are not homogeneous, form bridges during removal or fail to flow properly. Such challenges in bulk material handling are business as usual at Kreyenborg, such as in the construction of special silos or mixing and feeding systems, and are therefore an integral part of every K trade fair.

Specialist in plastics recycling

Kreyenborg specializes in the recycling of post-consumer recycled PET flakes (rPET) and has developed the IR-Clean system in addition to the IRD’s classic crystallization and drying. rPET flakes are heated from the inside to the outside in just a few minutes. The decontamination performance of the IR Clean achieves a cleaning efficiency of over 95% and thus meets both the EU/EFSA and the US-FDA criteria, and up to 100 percent of the treated material can then be used for food packaging.

IR-Fresh system: deodorizing regrind

Kreyenborg can now also draw on a wealth of experience in the odor reduction of post-consumer plastics in the polyolefin sector. The PP or PE recyclates often absorb intense odors from cleaning agents, detergents, chemicals, cosmetics or fuels, and therefore cannot be processed further. Kreyenborg has developed a simple and fast process for deodorizing the regrind before or after the extrusion process (IR-Fresh system), which is also suitable as a retrofit solution for extrusion lines. Process times are significantly shortened and a high-quality plastic recyclate is produced.

NEW visual control software

Kreyenborg will present a preview of a completely new control system for the IRD. The 7- and 15-inch monitors have been given a graphical user interface and make the software much more user-friendly. Due to the visual structure, the software offers a better overview and easy control. In addition, some steps are no longer necessary. Greater transparency is now possible, allowing the user to make more accurate and faster decisions in the production process on the machine. The new panel with the graphical software will be part of every new IRD system in the future.

Focus on energy saving in the development of new systems

For the sustainable use of heat from infrared technology, Kreyenborg offers a retrofit solution for the IRD, the Eco-Boost. Heat from the infrared rotary tube is used to preheat the raw material waiting to be supplied. This can save up to 10 percent of energy use or increase the throughput of the material by up to 20 percent. The system can thus pay for itself after about one year. Kreyenborg sees the development of such solutions as an important contribution to energy efficiency and sustainability in plant engineering and to the circular economy in general.

Success for Kreyenborg’s IR-Clean Technology: EFSA gives positive “Scientific Opinion” on decontamination of rPET flakes Process reduces contamination of recycled material to a level determined harmless to health The Germany-based mechanical engineering company Kreyenborg has achieved a significant success under the new regulation (EU) 2022/1616 of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). At the end of May 2025, the authority issued a so-called positive ”Scientific Opinion” for its infrared technology ”IR-Clean” to the manufacturer, which specializes in processing technology for bulk materials in the plastics and food sectors. This process decontaminates recycled PET flakes, which can then be processed again for food packaging that can come into contact with all types of food. With this approval of the process by EFSA, Kreyenborg’s IR-Clean system will be assigned a unique recycling authorization number (RAN) and listed in a public register. According to the machine manufacturer Kreyenborg, several IR-Clean processes have already been individually rated positively by customers in accordance with the old regulation (EC) 282/2008. According to Kreyenborg, the approval

IR-FRESH® odor-minimization in recycled granulates and regrinds KREYENBORG’s new technology gives odor-contaminated post-consumer plastics, such as plastic packaging, a new life.
IR-FRESH® odor-minimization in recycled granulates and regrinds
KREYENBORG’s new technology gives odor-contaminated post-consumer plastics, such as plastic packaging, a new life. A large amount of plastic waste from consumer-market packaging is generated daily. In order to obtain high-quality plastic recyclates from these material streams, and to be able to make them reusable for high-quality applications, odorous substances that have migrated into the material during the course of the product-life must be removed. Up till now, these odorous substances could be removed only inadequately through recycling processes. But with the introduction of KREYENBORG’s new technology, IR-FRESH®, the scenario has changed. IR-FRESH® odor-minimization KREYENBORG has developed sustained, high-level expertise in plastics recycling, with solutions for decontamination of PCR-PET, crystallization, drying, and heating of bulk materials, using infrared technology. Further development of this technology has brought to the fore its newest member among its products, the IR-FRESH® - a modular system for the safe and efficient reduction of interfering odors in

PET- Recycling Solutions in South America: Kreyenborg installed IR-CLEAN®
Achieving suitability for foodstuff without retrofitting the line A PET film or sheet line can be retrofitted with an IR-CLEAN® system made by Kreyenborg GmbH & Co. KG from Senden, Germany, without any problems and, above all, without any time and efforts for reconstruction. Suitability for food production of the semi-finished products and optimization of the production line’s performance are both guaranteed. Recently, these advantageous features have convinced two manufacturers of PET thermoformed trays for foodstuff in South America, who have opted for these ‘Add-on’ modules from Germany for a total of three production lines of a throughput of more than 1,000 kg/h respectively. Now, these plastics processing companies are able to process up to 100% of recycling PET ware and operate on the packaging market with high-quality solutions suitable for food production applications. A high decontamination output, FDA and EFSA approvals, a simple and a both energy-efficient and performing process control as well as reduced assembly

Gentle Mixing for Improved End Products
Kreyenborg presents outstanding competence in bulk handling at this year’s K Automatized comprehensive concept solutions all around bulk handling are among the core competences of Kreyenborg gmbH & Co. KG from Senden, Germany. At his exhibition stand in hall 9, stand A-55, this machine builder with more than 50 years of experience in the industrial fields of drying, crystallizing, storing, mixing, conveying and metering of plastic materials shows the example of an MBM Quick Mixer with a volume capacity of 500 liters. This Mixer is perfectly suited for the gentle mixing of Masterbatch, Compound or Glass Fiber pellets. The Mixer shown is the smallest of the MBM series, which covers volume capacities ranging up to 20,000 liters. With these types of Quick Mixers, Kreyenborg perfectly meets the standards set by its customers concerning gentle handling of pellets, high accuracy of mixing and simple and quick methods of cleaning. The slowly turning big mixing screw and the short residence time in the Mixer ensure the gentle treatment of the material.
