Berthold’s microwave measurement in industry

Using the microwave measuring systems from Berthold Technologies, concentration, dry matter, or moisture content can be measured online in a wide variety of products in the ongoing process at shafts, pipelines, or containers.
From the food and chemical industries to power stations and mines - the areas of application for our microwave measuring systems are manifold. The choice of sensors and technical features, such as height, measurement dynamics, multi-frequency technology, user-friendly software, etc., is appropriately large.
With the microwave systems from Berthold, you can measure liquids, suspensions, pastes, granulates, powders and bulk solids online.

The measuring principle

The MicroPolar measuring systems use the special dielectric property of water. The measuring system generates microwaves that interact with the water molecules. This interaction causes an attenuation of the microwave energy, which can be detected as phase shift and attenuation.
Since the phase shift and attenuation change is directly proportional to the water content, the concentration of the medium can be determined with high accuracy. Berthold’s multi-frequency technology ensures very stable and reliable measurements that are unaffected by interfering reflections or resonances.
The microwave power of the MicroPolar measuring systems is so low (max. 10 mW) that the material to be measured is neither heated nor changed in any way.

General advantages

  1. Cost-optimized production
Online monitoring of production allows trends to be identified and, if necessary, interventions to be made in production at an early stage. The advantages are significant cost savings and improved productivity. For many of our customers, the system has already amortised in less than a year.
  2. Accurate, reliable and representative
Colour, viscosity, inhomogeneity, or dust have no influence on the measurement. The entire material cross section is always recorded. In addition, our advanced multi-frequency technology and a reference line for signal loss compensation ensure extremely stable and representative results.
  3. Contact free
Most of our sensors do not come into contact with the material being measured, so they are not subject to any wear and tear. Maintenance or special cleaning of the system is not required.
  4. Easy to use
Our microwave systems are easy to install on existing equipment. The transmitter has a large display and user-friendly software. It also offers automatic on-site calibration.

Moisture measurements

The Berthold MicroPolar microwave measuring system or microwave resonator can measure the moisture or dry content of different bulk materials very accurately online. With the specially developed sensors, measurements at the conveyor belt, silo, hopper, or shaft can be easily realised. Typical applications are the food, chemical and construction industries, mining, power generation and many more.

Density measurement in the thickener for process optimisation
Gravity settling drives the solid-liquid separation: Optimize your discharge process Large volume thickening tanks are used in the mining industry to concentrate ore or minerals. Gravity settling drives the solid-liquid separation, which concentrates the solids at the bottom of the tank. The concentrated slurry is removed via an underflow outlet and should have a high solids content. However, care must be taken to monitor slurry solids content, as too high solids content can clog or damage pumps and pipes. Berthold‘s SmartSeries LB 414 The SmartSeries LB 414 has been designed for the harshest of environments and is best suited for density measurements in the rough mining industry in non-hazardous and non-explosive environments. The solids content in the underflow is monitored continuously by the SmartSeries LB 414 radiometric density measurement system. The robust and cost-efficient device provides a reliable measurement with excellent accuracy and reproducibility for many years. The local user interface with display and software focused

Whitepaper: Rod sources for radiometric measurements Long-lasting process quality due to advantageous measuring arrangement.
Whitepaper: Rod sources for radiometric measurements
Long-lasting process quality due to advantageous measuring arrangement. A rod source/point detector arrangement offers numerous advantages that cannot be achieved with a point source/rod detector arrangement. Due to less frequent production downtimes, simpler and thus more economical spare parts inventory, increased long-term and temperature stability and consistent process quality, the higher acquisition costs are mitigated within a short period of time. Introduction When planning a radiometric measurement, the technical design is fundamental. It is created and developed based on process conditions, process geometry, customer input as well as local background radiation, site conditions, and mounting space limitations. For the design of radiometric level or bulk flow measurements, a choice must be made between two arrangements: a point source with a rod detector, or a rod source and a point detector, see fig 1. Due to the slightly lower purchase price, the arrangement with a point source and rod detector is frequently selected.

InlineSENS: density measuring cell with low energy gamma radiation Berthold Technologies introduces the InlineSENS, a measuring cell with low energy gamma radiation for very precise measurements of density of powders, pastes and sludges
InlineSENS: density measuring cell with low energy gamma radiation
Berthold Technologies introduces the InlineSENS, a measuring cell with low energy gamma radiation for very precise measurements of density of powders, pastes and sludges The InlineSENS (LB 4700-5x-…) combines both a radiation source and scintillation detector in one device. Its use of low-energy gamma radiation from an Am-241 or Cm-244 source provides for strong responses to even the slightest change in product composition, with extremely low dose rates. The isotope Am-241 or Cm-244 is used as the radiation source. The advantage: Am-241 and Cm-244 have very low radiation energies, which correspond approximately to the energy of X-rays. The density measuring system InlineSENS offers high statistical accuracy and long-term stability by using a highly sensitive scintillation detector with patented drift compensation. The measuring system, which is made entirely of stainless steel, is permanently flanged to the pipeline and continuously measures the product density of liquids, suspensions, slurries, and bulk solids. In the case of the Am-241 version, the product pipe can also be supplied with a liner of Teflon (PTFE) or rubber if

Moisture measurement of gypsum
Continuous moisture measurement of gypsum from quarries allows product distribution in the storage silo to be optimized according to moisture content. Microwave technology The Micro-Polar moisture meter provides online measurement of the moisture content of gypsum transported by a conveyor belt to the intermediary storage before the kiln. Using microwave technology, a non-contacting measurement is made through the entire product height. This allows a representative online measurement even if the product on the belt comes from a mixture of different storage areas with different humidity levels. Online measurement for quality improvement Microwave measurement is non-contacting; no sensor comes into contact with the product to be measured, which limits maintenance and avoids special cleaning. The measurement is not influenced by the colour or inhomogeneity of the measured product. Furthermore, the measurement is carried out on the entire product profile while traditional measurements only measure the surface of the material profile. In addition, the multi-frequency technique and the reference line enhance the
