SMC solution for air suction - Small in size, big in benefits

SMC has developed a ‘fitting’ solution for a textile industry customer, thanks to its new air amplifier, that is small in size but has delivered big benefits by reducing energy consumption by a fifth.

The ZH20-X185 air amplifier, from SMC’s Energy Saving and Vacuum range, uses compressed air technology for suction and blowing and it has proved to be an effective and cost efficient alternative to traditional electric hoovers and fans.

Ideal for processes requiring the removal or suction of small particles or gases, the ZH20-X185 has been certified as the best solution and an alternative to electric hoovers. In this instance, SMC’s customer needed to suction the fabric leftovers when operating an ultrasonic fabric cutting machine. The hoover not only used 3.75 Kw of electricity but also proved to be a bulky and noisy solution that required a great deal of maintenance due to its moving parts. SMC specialists were quick to see the benefits that the air amplifier could bring to its customer by offering enough power to suction the fabric more efficiently.

By using SMC´s Energy Saving programme, it was calculated the equivalent electric consumption of the air amplifier for the suction application was only 0.75 kW, reducing energy and costs by a fifth. In addition, SMC´s air amplifier also resolved its customer’s additional requirements. The ZH20-X185 is a small device (the size of a nozzle), extremely quiet and most importantly it is virtually maintenance free as it does not have moving parts. Finally, since it is air driven, it is much safer to operate as there is no need for electricity, avoiding explosion hazards

Simple to operate, the lightweight ZH20-X185 air amplifier multiplies the flow rate of compressed air entering the device by three times for suction and four times for blowing. This offers up to 70% less air consumption, due to a decrease in pressure making it ideal for applications that require a high flow blowing or suctioning in open air applications.

This not only leads to reduced compressor demand but also reduces the energy consumption ratio and cuts electricity costs. It is ideal, therefore, for applications that require a high flow blowing or suctioning in open air applications.
The successful use of the ZH20—X185 in a textile manufacturing installation demonstrates that compressed air solutions can be more productive and energy efficient than traditional electric solutions.
