Gcm 250

Continuous mixing processes for pharmaceutical solids

A new kind of micro mixer now makes it possible to carry out continuous solid substance processes in the pharmaceutical industry. This increases flexibility when compared with the traditional batch process and also reduces the space required for this.

The Food Drug Administration FDA, the American approval authority for pharmaceutical products, started the initiative “Continuous Manufacturing” some years ago. This initiative is aimed at improving the production process, shortening the time required for the development of a product which in turn then leads to reduced production costs. Gericke have extended their range of GCM continuous mixers to ensure optimum processing of these very small throughput volumes. The GCM 250 is designed for a capacity of 1 - 200 kg/h allowing a tablet compaction unit, for example, to be installed directly upstream for the blending process.

The mixer has a cantilevered mixing rotor with a quick release connection. A purely metallic flashed shaft seal guarantees that none of the products can enter into this chamber. The mixing chamber rotor and shaft seal can be separated from the stationary drive unit in a mat-ter of a few seconds for cleaning. All parts can be cleaned in an autoclave.

The mixer and the loss-in-weight feeders can be tested in the Gericke Test Centre.
