Precision in Focus: Mixing Technology for Supplements

In the production of dietary supplements, food law and pharma standards merge. At Interpack, amixon shows how modern mixing concepts combine top homogeneity with maximum product protection.

For over 40 years, amixon has developed precision mixers for dietary supplements, vitamin blends, and sports nutrition. This article provides an overview of the key process requirements in supplement production based on amixon experience, showing how manufacturers can ensure mixing quality, gentle handling, and hygiene.

Pharma Requirements in a Growing Supplement Market

Dietary supplements are legally food but practically closer to pharmaceuticals. Complex formulations with vitamins, probiotics, and bioactive substances require reproducible processes and GMP-compliant plants. Contract manufacturers face the added challenge of multiple daily recipes in the same machines, demanding peak allergen management and cleanability.

Four Pillars of Process Engineering Excellence

  1. Homogeneity and dosing accuracy: Active ingredients must be identically distributed in every portion. The benchmark is a standard deviation in mixing quality of less than 1%.
  2. Protection of sensitive ingredients: Proteins, probiotics, and vitamins are sensitive to heat and shear forces. Suitable mixers operate with low peripheral speeds and three-dimensional product movement.
  3. Liquid addition in powder systems: The uniform integration of lipophilic liquids like carrier oils or aromas without lump formation is one of the most demanding tasks in supplement mixing.
  4. Discharge and product changeover: Dead-space-free designs and complete discharge—target value below 0.14 per mille of the batch mass—are requirements for cross-free production and short cleaning times.

amixon has consistently aligned its machine concepts for supplement mixing with these four requirements—from the mixing chamber geometry and tool kinematics to the discharge system.
