Improving Powder Transfer
Improving Powder Transfer
Common Problems with Powder Transfer Typically, there are two major problems which arise during the powder transfer; excess dust and waste. Excess dust is a hazard to operator health, as well as to the working environment (and can even result in fatal explosions when mismanaged). Meanwhile, waste material results in poor overall efficiency; a problem also caused by excessive manual handling during processing. Hence in this regard waste is two-fold, it is physical waste (loss of material) and it is time waste (loss of production) both of which negatively impact the overall efficiency of a process. Thus, if an engineer can overcome the problems associated with excess dust and waste, then the efficiency of a process can be maximised to improve hygiene and ultimately profitability. Solutions for Powder Transfer There are three simple solutions to improve powder transfer; vacuum transfer, gravity feed and the use of valves – all of which…

Vacuum Conveying – Necessary Evil or Process Champion?
Vacuum Conveying – Necessary Evil or Process Champion?
Introduction Vacuum conveying or pneumatic transfer is often regarded as a necessary evil in processing. Why spend money on a system which does not alter the process or add value? The truth about vacuum conveying is quite the opposite, and a well-designed system can enhance a process, increasing throughput and efficiency, eliminating the risk of operator injury and exposure, and ensuring product containment. The Problem The typical integrated pharmaceutical granulation suite is perhaps the best example of these principles being optimally applied. The raw material is first loaded into a high-shear mixer / granulator. The dried granule is then passed through a second mill to remove agglomerates formed in the drying process, and then into bins or IBCs for onward movement to tabletting etc. The movement of the wet mass from high-shear mixer, through the wet mill and into the dryer bowl is most commonly achieved under gravity, but it is…
