Cyclomix line extended Hosokawa Micron is launching a new concept for mid-size Cyclomix high shear powder mixing systems with exchangeable product bowls of 5 litres and 15 litres. Based on the successful Cyclomix technology, this concept will provide even more versatility for customers. The systems will be available with a range of options allowing users to select the optimal configuration. Thanks to exchangeable 5-litre and 15-litre product bowls, customers can use a single drive unit with ancillaries and only need to adjust the product bowl to suit their needs. The modular design includes options for: * Cooling by tap water or water chiller * Standard or pharma control system * Lip seal or mechanical seal for the rotor * Standalone or 'through the wall' design * Lift to support bowl changing This system will fit into the Cyclomix range in between the Mini Cyclomix for R&D purposes and the larger Cyclomix concept which is suitable for bowls of 50 litres, 75 litres and 100 litres.

Early experiments at Hosokawa Micron BV in Doetinchem, starting about 10 years ago, with a conventional vacuum dryer operated at low temperatures and ultra-low pressures showed that it was possible to operate a freeze dryer under active conditions. The result was a lump-free, free-flowing product. Nowadays the Active Freeze Dryer consists of a dedicated designed drying chamber and collecting filter. In the chamber the material to be dried is frozen very fast with the aid of a freezing medium or jacket cooling. Typically a frozen granular structure is obtained after freezing in this way. Once the freezing step is completed the drying chamber is further evacuated. After evacuation of the eventual freezing agent the sublimation process will start. During sublimation the heat is supplied through the jacket and efficiently distributed throughout the product by the stirrer. In this presentation Hosokawa informed the audience about their latest developments on their proprietary drying equipment and process integrated solutions contribution to sustainable drying processes. The organization committee decided that Hosokawa presented the `Best Dryer Design among the Industries Participating in the NDC 2013`. Historically Hosokawa Micron B.V. have supplied a lot of vacuum dryers that are used in the pharmaceutical industry. In this industry, industrial batch sizes are typically 1000 – 6000 liters. Mid-intensity mixing The Vitomix: Fast and Compact Hosokawa Micron B.V. has developed a new mixer under the name Vitomix. This mixer bridges the gap between low shear and high shear mixing. Striking aspect is its extremely compact design. Thanks to a partly cylindrical structure, an adapted conical shape and bottom, the same volume is achieved with a considerably reduced structural height. The Vitomix has a double ribbon screw. Intensomix: Mid shear Mixer Hosokawa Micron bridges the gap between low shear and high shear mixing with the Intensomix The Intensomix is a mid shear mixer. This cylindrical mixer has a ribbon paddle agitating rotor in the form of a central shaft with three agitation blades attached to it. The shape of the agitation blades ensures the transport of the material upwards. Great advantage of this is the realisation of a much more compact cylindrical design with a slightly conical bottom. The three agitation blades are positioned in a way that a certain amount of friction occurs along the wall during mixing. Linear speeds of the rotor of the Intensomix are in a range of 1 m/s to 10 m/s. Two lump breakers of 7.5 kW each are placed in the sidewall for efficient admixing of fluids. Hosokawa mixing sensor As specialist in powder processing technology Hosokawa Micron B.V. has developed a new powder mixing sensor. With this sensor the mixing of powders can be followed on-line. Operators are now able to see when the mixing process is complete and so the optimum mixing time for every batch can be obtained. In many cases this will result in a reduction of the mixing time. The other main advantage is the ability to let the sensor contribute to the quality control of your product. The sensor measures the reflection of light and from this signal a mixing index is calculated. For the same end product the end-level of the mixing index is the same. The sensor is not developed for quality assurance, but to give the operator insight into the quality control of the product.
