The advantages of a single-shaft shredder are well known: it is possible to fill a feed hopper which is then gradually emptied by means of a hydraulically operated ram without the assistance of operators: due to its special design, the rotor only “nibbles” at the material that is fed via the hydraulic ram. Until now it has not been possible to obtain small granule sizes with these shredders: often a 15 or 20 mm-screen has been the lower limit, making intermediate conveying and a secondary granulator necessary in order to achieve smaller granule sizes ranging from 4 to 8 mm and a satisfactory throughput. The GRAF company based at Teningen has recently commissioned a coextrusion blow-moulding machine manufacturing products for rainwater use with a volume of up to 3000 l. The Graf company has a large product range all about water management and is the greatest German manufacturer of rainwater containers. The multilayer containers are produced in one single production step and side products of each finished part are tops and tails with a unit weight of more than 20 kg, the weight of the purgings can be many times higher. On Wednesday 14.January 2009 one of the world largest PET bottle recycling plant for food grade flakes has been opened at Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. The operation is a joint venture of URRC and Coca Cola named NURRC and will process 50.000 tons / year (output) of PET bottles at its final stage. This plant is not only a significant environmental benefit but with 100 newly created jobs also an advantage for the local community. NURRC uses the latest state of the art technology in processing post consumer PET bottles into food grade flakes. HERBOLD Meckesheim has designed a compact line for the treatment of toner cartridges. This system has been built and recently delivered to a company in Southern Germany. Using a belt conveyor with a hydraulic pushing device the material is transported to a first shredder where the material is coarsely size-reduced. If necessary, metals can be discharged at this step. Afterwards the material is fed to a slow-running HERBOLD granulator of the SML-LS series which, due to a low circumferential speed, will provide the final granular size of the material. With the help of a spiral conveyor the material is transported to a screening machine where the toner dust developed during size-reduction will be separated from the ground material. Since toner can provoke dust explosions, the machine has been equipped with a corresponding surveillance device. HERBOLD MECKESHEIM recently supplied a system for recycling film edge trims, which operates smoothly at a rate of 1200 meters/minute. The edge trims are drawn in-line, size-reduced, stored in a silo and recycled. d99 = 63 micron is now feasible with HERBOLD knife pulverisers of the SMF series For the fine-grinding of cellulose HERBOLD can offer a special series of pulverisers with a high cutting rate. These are knife pulverisers with a high number of revolutions, equipped with rotating and bed knives. The feeding is made by gravity (cellulose sheets) or with a roller feeding device (bales), the end fineness is determined by the size of the screen holes. With intensive research work HERBOLD succeeded in sophisticating the machines so that fineness degrees of d99 = 63 micron can be reached. Herbold Meckesheim has developed a granulator system for the recycling of vials with residual liquid. The waste from the process is collected in containers and fed into the granulator using a lifting and tilting device. Water is added to the granulating process in order to use the friction for dissolving the residual liquid from the surface of the material. The dirty water is spun off and material is dried. The illustration shown has been designed for a pharmaceutical company. Stainless steel is used where product makes contact. Systems can be provided with capacities from 100 to 5000 Kg/h.
