Moisture Measurement in Bulk Material Processes

Precise moisture measurement in bulk material processes: Discover how moisture measuring sensors measurably improve quality, efficiency, and process reliability.
Accurate moisture determination is essential for stable and efficient bulk material processing. ACO moisture measuring sensors enable reliable inline, online, and atline measurement directly within the process line. They can be flexibly integrated into silos, on or under conveyor belts, inside screw conveyors, as well as in chutes, mixers, or hoppers. The process diagram illustrates typical installation points within automated process chains. With customized installation kits and optimized sensor technology, almost any bulk material – from powders to granulates and mixtures – can be monitored precisely and continuously.

Flexible Integration into Existing Systems

The sensors can be easily connected to existing control systems. Via PLC and PC interfaces, real-time data can be collected, analyzed, and used for process control. This enables consistent product quality, shorter drying times, and improved energy efficiency across the entire production process.

How does the capacitive measuring principle work? The function of a moisture sensors using a capacitive measuring principle is explained.
How does the capacitive measuring principle work?
The function of a moisture sensors using a capacitive measuring principle is explained. There are plenty of different measuring methods to determine the residual moisture of material such as bulk solids. Now we are focusing on the capacitive functional principle. Inter alia it finds its use in in-line moisture measurement (directly integrated within a working process). It can be classified into two methods of moisture measurement, direct and indirect. Direct measurement Direct measuring procedures are e.g. the Karl-Fischer-Tritation or drying out material (loss of water by using a drying cabinet, probably the most often used method). Indirect measurement Moisture sensors and systems belong to the indirect moisture measuring techniques as they allow conclusion concerning the water content by using for example the capacitive moisture measuring principle. Further possible measurements work with microwave, infrared or conductance methods. The main criteria is that these procedures do not detect the residual moisture of the bulk solids directly. Rather

Moisture measurement of biomass Examples: moisture measurement of wood chips in free fall; of sawdust mounted in a screw conveyor
Moisture measurement of biomass
Examples: moisture measurement of wood chips in free fall; of sawdust mounted in a screw conveyor Biomass - this umbrella term mainly coveres organic and biogenic but non-fossil material that successfully can be used for extracting energy. Mainly this material finds its field of application in biomass heating systems. You can differentiate between, inter alia sawdust, wood chips, wood pellets, straw and so on. Based on the material, on its shape and on the production and funding process different measuring locations have to be evaluated against each other. Especially in the wood pellet branch of Germany, Austria and Switzerland moisture measuring systems made by ACO have become indispensable for the real time determination of the moisture content. Even tricky applications could be managed successfully by using the broad variety of ACO’s homemade integration kits. Frequently requested: * Wood pellets * Wood chips * Sawdust Feasible measuring positions: * Chute * Free fall * Bypass * Drag chain conveyor * Screw conveyor

ACO BMMS moisture sensor for bulk materials
Inline moisture measurement directly in the production process results in optimization of product quality & operating costs and improved flow behavior & storage Making good things even better To be able to provide customers with a precise and reliable moisture measurement system in a wide range of applications, a company has to be one step ahead. ”Excuse me - I’m the new one” The new capacitive moisture measurement sensor type BMMS from ACO is setting a new standard in terms of precision, accuracy, reliability and is ideally prepared for future requirements. With its state-of-the-art technology, it measures the material moisture in real time. In addition, it is insensitive to external influences and easy to integrate into the production process. The BMMS moisture measurement sensors are factory calibrated and allows a complete reproducibility of the measurement data. When the moisture sensor is replaced, existing calibration data can be used across all sensors, avoiding the need for recalibration. Easy installation In operation, the humidity sensor requires nothing but a power supply, a display or a controller

SFM1 - Compressor unit with integrated moisture measurement
Compacting unit for use with finer bulk material, e.g. sawdust and wood shavings The SFM1 compressor unit is specially designed for the determination of the moisture content of medium to fine materials. The pneumatic cylinder moves the "back wall" of the SFM1. This compacts the incoming material and pushes it with constant conditions over the sensor measuring surface of the integrated ACO moisture sensor. The measuring surface is cleaned automatically through the cylinder movements during the measuring processes. The constant material compaction and the constant height of the material allow best measuring results. - ideal measuring conditions for the integration of a moisture measurement - can be integrated into existing systems at a later date - automatic cleaning of the sensor measuring surface - optional: compact PLC for compressor unit This compressor unit is optimized for the use with sawdust or wood shavings in the production of wood pellets and has been used successfully for several years.

ACO AMMS moisture sensor Moisture measurement for coffeebeans in jute sacks
ACO AMMS moisture sensor
Moisture measurement for coffeebeans in jute sacks The AMMS sensor with its integrated microprocessor establishes a transition between the DMMS system and the analog moisture measuring sensor MMS. Besides a power supply, this sensor only needs a display or a PLC which is waiting for its measuring value. The AMMS sensor has been designed for applications which do not need a multi-pieced system but benefit of a precise on-line calibration that is able to compensate the influences of the installation. It’s also possible to calibrate the AMMS sensor directly by an integrated rotary encoder. This work actually takes place before the sensor has been installed. Measurable materials: biomass, pellets, wood chips, wood shavings, wood boards, firewood, coffee beans, cocoa beans, salt, paper, grain, corn, wheat, concrete, sand, ash, recycling glass, plastic, peat and much more! Don’t you know if your material is measurable? We examine your material in our in-house laboratory. Please do not hesitate to contact us!
