Na22 Density Meter: A Maintenance-Free Solution for Slurry Concentrati

In the processing of iron ore, particularly during dehydration and tailings transport, measuring the concentration of slurry inside pipelines is a critical task. If these levels are not monitored accurately, it can lead to serious operational failures. Traditional contact-style meters often struggle in these environments because their probes are directly exposed to the abrasive slurry, leading to constant wear, scaling, and the need for frequent recalibration.
The Problem: Why Slurry Measurement Often Fails
Operators in the mining industry face three main risks when concentration data is unreliable:
  • Wasted Chemicals: The amount of flocculants used depends entirely on the slurry’s thickness. Inaccurate data leads to either wasting expensive chemicals or failing to treat the material properly.
  • Pipeline Blockages: If the slurry becomes too thick and the system doesn’t catch it, pipes can clog or pumps can overload. This often results in burst pipes and expensive emergency shutdowns.
  • Quality Issues: If the concentration is off before the filtration stage, the final product may contain too much moisture, which can lead to it being rejected by customers.
The Solution: Non-Contact Sensing with the Na22 Density Meter
The RETTAR Na22 Density Meter offers a different approach by focusing on safety and ease of use. It solves the traditional ”probe wear” problem by clamping the sensor externally to the pipe entirely.
  • Safety Without the Paperwork: The device uses a Sodium-22 (Na22) source that is officially classified as ”exempt.” This means its activity level is low enough that most users can buy and install it without the complex radiation licenses usually required for industrial sources.
  • Installation Without Downtime: Because it is a non-contact device, the sensor clamps onto the outside of the existing pipe. There is no need to cut into the line, drill holes, or stop production during installation.
  • Digital Accuracy: Instead of using old-fashioned pulse signals that can drift or skip, the system uses RS485 digital communication. This ensures the data stays stable and accurate even over long distances.
  • Self-Correcting Technology: The meter includes an auxiliary sensor to cancel out external interference and uses real-time temperature compensation. This allows the system to maintain an accuracy of ±1% even as environmental conditions change.
