more than 25 years of innovation The invention of the vacuum coating process, more than 25 years ago, was an evolution of the Dinnissen Pegasus® Paddle Mixer. In this double-axle mixer the product is raised in a fluidized zone, giving a gentle, fast and energy efficient mixing process. In experiments carried out in a special mixer under vacuum conditions high concentrations of liquid were sprayed onto the feed pellets. Upon removal of the vacuum the liquid was drawn deeply into the coated pellets. In this way Dinnissen succeeded to gradually increase the fat content of pellets up to 42%. Developing a new sifter with improved inspection methods to prevent cross contamination was a challenging task that Dinnissen was happy to accept. Thanks to the extensive experience and expertise, the engineers at Dinnissen developed the custom-made Wingdoor sifter; a perfect combination of innovative power and the sieving process. The major advantage of this machine is that the doors can now open over the entire length of the machine. Therefore, the sieve does not need to be driven out for inspection, so that cross contamination is prevented. The replacement of the sieve mesh is naturally very efficient because the sieve basket can still be moved out of the machine. The shape of the D-Topline installation is modified to create in a drop shape, reducing the risk of product adhesion. With this machine we can spray on, mix and cool the product via a thermplate cooling jacket, which ensures that the products stay below the critical temperatures during processing. In addition, this D-Topline Process Unit is equipped with an additional hinged jacketed front door. This feature makes it easier to inspect and clean the mixer. Our latest design is completely C.I.P.- cleanable and equipped with split-seal Tri-Clamp connections.

Recently, Dinnissen designed, built and delivered a tandem vessel dense phase conveying system for the dairy industry, that can be placed directly underneath a spray tower. Usually, Dinnissen uses dry-cleaning with recipe changeovers. However, when cross contamination restrictions are very strict (for example with allergen or lactose/ non lactose change-overs), CIP systems and wet cleaning-in-place are mandatory. To meet these requirements, we have designed a CIP system on the pressure vessels, which is installed onto the equipment. This means no installation and adjustments are needed during change-over. Two installed CIP-nozzles are pushed out into the product area and clean the vessels completely with the CIP cycle of the spray tower. After that, the system is dried and ready for production again. All instruments are suitable flushed mounted and the pressure vessels are 100% clean.

In collaboration with our new Dinnissen Asia office, we have developed a ‘hygienic lump breaker’ for a major Infant Food-producer. Our aim was to create a new ‘Viwateq easy- clean’ design without any hollow bodies that would be simple to extract: not only the rotating part is extractable, but the screen too. Dinnissen has a lot of experience in Cantilever, EHDG and smooth design, so we decided to develop a breaker that goes beyond those of our direct competition. Our new design has immediately led to the sales of several units to more customers. Nuscience’s new factory in Ghent for producing premixes, young animal feed and specialties, has been named as this year’s ”Factory of the Future 4.0”. Dinnissen has recently built a complete mixing plant for a German client, which includes six bulk bag unloading stations for the raw materials. The installation was intended for their new plant in Asia and the client wanted absolute assurance that the system worked smoothly with their somewhat sticky raw materials. It was also necessary to set up the facility in Asia in a very short period of time. The solution presented by Dinnissen consisted of a modular construction in a separate hall at their factory in Sevenum. The complete installation, 8 meters high, was assembled in a fully operational condition including wiring and controls. It consisted of a supply line with 6 bulk bag unloading stations, with the raw material dispensed through a Dinnissen Feeder Valve with ‘loss-in-weight’ dosing and transported to the Pegasus mixer by a bucket elevator. The Chinese infant food manufacturer, Synutra has invested in a new greenfield mega-plant located in Carhaix-Plouguer, Brittany. This facility processes milk into dry baby food intended for export to China. The plant requires 288 million litres milk per year, which is provided by 800 farmers from the Sodiaal regional cooperative. The construction of this greenfield plant began in 2014 and the process involved a total of ten suppliers from ten different countries. Dinnissen Process Technology came into the picture at a relatively late stage with an unusual proposal for the dry mixing line. This turned out to have so many advantages that the concept of the plant and the design of the building were substantially adjusted to suit it. Synutra, one of the most important Chinese producers of baby food, has erected a “greenfield” plant in Carhaix, France. For this purpose Dinnissen has implemented a complete dry mix plant. Dinnissen delivered due to their “lean gravity mixing concept” a wholistic concept for 14 T/h baby food, corresponding to the latest technology in the matter of hygiene and quick cleaning. A number of engineers from Dinnissen Process Technology are investigating the use of Virtual Reality in order to already provide the customer an experience of the new plant. They walk together virtually through the factory, which still only consists of bits and bytes. At Industrial Processing and together with Vroom, Dinnissen is demonstrating this new application live in the Factory of the Future. A small group of engineers is currently working with virtual reality in a research phase. In the second half of 2015, Dinnissen Process Technology invested in and expanded their own D-Innocenter test plant. The existing set-up for tests with pneumatic conveying is one of the facilities that has been upgraded. With the latest additions to the D-Innocenter, Dinnissen Process Technology now can offer an even more extensive range of tests for pneumatic conveying. All aspects can be tested, including dense phase, dune phase, and dilute phase. These can be performed on either vacuum or pressure systems, and with or without air assist. The total length of pipework available has been extended and now comes to around 120 meters, with diameters varying between 50 to 110 mm. A new powder-flow tester increases the understanding of the processed product. Combining these facilities with the comprehensive analysis-equipment for powder and bulk materials, as well as the design and calculation software available to Dinnissen, it makes for a set-up where full scale testing can be offered.

Dinnissen Process Technology in Sevenum (The Netherlands) celebrates this year the 25th anniversary of the vacuum coating technology. In 1991 Dinnissen developed this innovative technology in secret, in cooperation with the Norwegian fish feed producer Skretting. The challenge was to dramatically increase the fat content in the core of a feed pellet. The invention of the vacuum coater was an evolution of the development of the Pegasus® paddle mixer of Dinnissen. In this double-axle mixer the product is raised in a fluidized zone, giving a gentle, fast and energy efficient mixing process. In experiments carried out in a special mixer under vacuum conditions high concentrations of liquid were sprayed onto the feed pellets.
